i have a 14" portable sony tv that cant detect an ntsc signal (my tv plays R1 dvds in black and white), so i was wondering if there is some kind of convertor available that can help with this? otherwise can anyone recommend a reasonably cheap 14" tv that can support a `true` ntsc signal? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have had the same problem. After going to some trouble to ensure I bought a multiregion DVD player I found my television wasn`t NTSC compatible. You can buy a NTSC to Pal convertor for about £60 from either 01634 315195 or www.topsat.co.uk. If anybody has acheaper alternative I`d like to know.

"NTSC to PAL convertor Most UK televisions can lock on to an NTSC signal and give a stable but black and white picture. If this is the case, the SB3600 convertor will enable you to view a stable colour image. Has composite video and audio connections in and out plus UHF out (fixed at Channel 36). Fantastic value. [SB3600] Note: If your TV can`t display a black and white image then the SB3600 won`t help. Also, because the frame rate remains unaltered at 30 fps you won`t be able to record the image on a standard PAL VCR."

Does it follow that if you already have a Video which can play succesfully NTSC VHS Video tapes through your PAL TV, that a DVD Player which can play both Multi-Region PAL and NTSC DVD discs will work with the TV also ?
Just checking before I get some Region1 NTSC DVD discs.

no! when you watch ntsc videos on a pal tv your watching in a `modified` ntsc mode, however dvd players require a `true` ntsc signal thats why my initital problem. oh yeah cheers for the info chaps!

Maplins sell a NTSC - PAL convertor, you can get them either from Maplins shops or through www.maplin.co.uk for £49.99 item code NZ773.

It depends on the player. Most output PAL-60, some (actually, relatively few, such as Sony models) will only output "true" NTSC.

I was under the impression that if a TV could accept an RGB signal then it could display an NTSC picture in colour. Is this right? I have a tosh sd110e and am thinking of making it multiregion, but I don`t know if my TV will accept an NTSC signal. The player can be set to either PAL or Auto. Does Auto setting change an NTSC signal to a PAL60, which I know my TV can accept?

If you`re using RGB, the only question is whether your TV can sync to 60Hz (most TVs made in the last 10 years or so can). The PAL/NTSC colour issue is bypassed entirely.
As for your Tosh, as far as I know, if you set it to PAL you`ll get PAL-60 from NTSC DVDs, whereas setting it to Auto will give you NTSC from NTSC DVDs. This is only for composite; with RGB it doesn`t make a jot of difference what this switch is set to, you`ll always get a perfect colour picture on a 60Hz-compliant TV.
