HD CRTS - DOES IT REALLY EXIST IN UK? (PLEASE HELP WITH ESTABLISHING)

Chris_MH (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 8th May 2006, 12:20

HD LCDS/Plasmas are redicularly priced and still dont come close to the quality of CRTS.

There was a posting mentioning SAMSUNG having a 32`` HD slim line TV. They`re cheap in comparison and look good. But other websites say it`s not HD ready. I know this technology is readily available in the US, but is there any news the technology coming here?

Here`s link on Samsung website ... indicating HD ready:-
http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/television/crt/index.asp

Here`s link with Currys ... indicating not HD ready .... search model number WS32Z306V:-
http://www.currys.co.uk

Does anyone know if there is a HD ready CRT in the UK (any make) ... if so please provide your links and lets clear up this issue.

Thanks all 8)

CRT will only display 500 lines.
HD is 1080 lines,so no CRT (regardless of size) will give you a proper HD picture.

Wrong.
There`s been quite a few threads on here about them. Can even display 1080i I seem to recall. Although there`s a bit of confusion on their website.
Some info here.
Their site says "PAL : 1080i(HD) / 576P(SD)/ 480P(SD)/ 576i(Analog)/ 480i(Analog)" here.
Pics here and here too.
I`ve got friends with a place in Florida - with an HD CRT. Don`t seem to want to do them over here though - really pushing LCD/Plasma.
EDIT:From French site.

I`m confused.

Although that TV does, indeed, say it can handle 1080i,the spec says it does not have HDMI or component inputs.

SKY`s HD box,I believe, only offers HDMI or component,so how would one connect it to that TV ?

I think the HD Ready screen is not in stores yet... here`s a link saying samsung intend to introduce a TV - the TV in the article looks suspiciously like the one in currys.

If you go into the Samsung.co.uk or Samsung.com website it does not claim the WS32Z306V is HD ready.

In fact,if you download the user manual,it shows you pictures of the connections.
No HDMI or component inputs, back or side panels.

Yes, it`s all a bit confusing and their own website seems to contradict itself.
All I`m saying is, contrary to popular belief, there are HD CRT TV`s but maybe it`s not in some company`s interest to advertise them.?..
Everybody is running out getting a nice thin plasma/lcd and they do look nice. Very few people like to admit though that, often the picture on the CRT they replaced was probably better.. Certainly on analogue terrestrial broadcasts.
My thinking is that CRT pictures are often considered to be a better picture than their replacements except where HD or DVD is concerned. If Samsung have somehow managed to bring the best of both worlds then, especially at the prices being talked about, maybe they`re worth a look. Like I said, specs and their site don`t help much but there are DEFINITELY HD CRT`s around. Would be really interested in the picture quality.
Check here and here too (similar/same article though.)
Comet selling one too. (again, unclear on specs except the big HD sign on the picture) Maybe one instore too - for all their instore demos are worth :/ ;)
Can`t 42%er call Samsung and ask them a few `insider` questions? ;)
Be interesting in a few years when people are told to upgrade again because their `new` TV won`t play 1080p...... ;)

Given the release of the XBOX 360 HD DVD drive today, and the new PS3 details with no HDCP port - I think anyone getting an HD TV should make sure that it has component input. The HDMI/HDCP inputs dont seem to be catching much fancy IMO.

SKY have only recently confirmed they will be going with 1080i,so a few people will have been caught out,but SKY have intimated their HD boxes will be able to switch 1080i down to 720p.

Article as follows:

High Definition TV news Posted Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

EXCLUSIVE: Sky changes mind and announces 1080i for all its HD broadcasts

Having originally stated that it would likely use a combination of 720p and 1080i high definition formats on its new HD platform, Sky has just exclusively revealed to us that it`s now intending to broadcast all of its Sky HD channels in the 1080i format from launch.

It will be interesting to see how this surprising decision works out when it comes to showing sports footage, which is widely thought to look better in 720p because of its high motion content. The 1080i decision also lends a little - though it really is only a little - more credibility to the scare story run in the Daily Mail a few weeks back suggesting that the 720/768-line TVs that currently make up the vast majority of the TV market aren`t completely ideal for getting the best from the available (1080i) HD signals.

Another interesting fact we discovered during our discussions with Sky is that the Sky HD receiver will apparently let you adjust the signal output from the box so that, say, even though a broadcast is in 1080i, the box can output it in 720p.

Yeah, they should be OK for 1080i - although most do think 720P is better for sports etc. But I said 1080P. Only a few current screens can show that..
