Beko 28" Widescreen Tv - Any Good?

Big A (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 3rd September 2001, 11:38

Hi

Interested in the above TV as I can get it for £270, however, just wondered if anyone has the TV or has heard anything about it which they wish to share with me.

I have heard that it is NTSC compatible, is this true?

What is the picture/sound like?

ANY HELP THANKFULLY RECEIVED!

Andrew

My brother`s got one.
Must have something in common with the Wharfedale, as both his and my mate`s TV both had to get engineers out to sort some kind of problem common to both that was causing a potential fire hazard. Check the one you`re looking at isn`t old stock that hasn`t been modified.
Performance-wise it`s what you`d expect for the dosh. The sound is a bit tinny, the remote`s a bit nasty. They only have one RGB enabled scart, and the AV2 doesn`t do S-VHS, so it means adaptors for SKY and DVD.The picture`s fine, but the biggest problem I find with my bruv`s Beko, and my mate`s Wharfy, is that both only have 16:9 settings. This means that non-widescreen transmissions are squashed because they`re being stretched to fit the screen. More expensive TV`s usually have some kind of `auto/panoramic` setting for non-widescreen transmissions that avoids the squashed look, but still fills the screen. Personally, I`m glad I stuck with my old TV until I could afford a good widescreen one, but if you absolutely must have one now, rather than save up more, then they`re OK.
The internet has some surprising bargains if you rake around you know. Only the other day Comet-online was auctioning a Sony 28 widescreen `manager`s special` for only £240 for example. It said it was scratched, but a scratched Sony is better than a spotless Beko...

That comet auction ended up a lot dearer than £240 - that`s the problem with auctions - you get all excited, and then the price rises and rises. Having said that, have a snoop around http://www.dabsxchange.com - a lot of toshiba stuff goes through there...

Hi

OK Thanks guys... I think I may just have to stay away from that TV then!!!

Do you recommend I pay that little bit extra (£100) and get a 28" Philips 28PW6006??

THANKS

Hi.

I will vote for Philips anyday. I have got 28" Dolby Pro Logic widescreen model and have been using it for few years. No problems so far. Does auto formating and allows you to choose various formats, including Zoom with subtitles (allowing you to watch 16:9 movies with subtitles).

I believe the newer models (including 28PW6006) have much flatter screens and more features.

Good luck...
