Hypothetical question, Using HDD to `back-up` bought DVD`s

BigRed (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 5th February 2006, 19:33

Just a hypothetical question for you. :B

Lets say I had a HDD DVD recorder (panasonic dmreh50 for instance) and I wanted to do myself a `back-up` copy of my high street DVD`s just incase there was a house fire. The original DVD may well be copywrite protected, Does this mean that it will not transfer to the HDD (hard disk drive), or does it mean it will not transfer back to a blank DVD ??

Is there anyway around this problem ?
Cheers

It won`t transfer to the HDD.
However, as you`ve posted this I assume from a PC................

Pioneer are the only brand to offer a full digital cloning feature via their Disc Backup feature enabling DVD to HDD then back again in full digital format.
Other makes, including Panasonic will copy to HDD but only in real time and with no menus etc(except with RAM).
Of course this still only applies to your own recordings.
You need a PC to do a proper copy with all the menus etc of a commericial disc.
This copy can then be copied using the Pioneer in about 15 minutes
