Recording from DVD to Video.

Richard Powell (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 11th October 2000, 12:08

Could someone possibly tell me why when I try and record VCD or DVD to video the recording always comes out in B/W with horizontal flashing lines? I`m obviously aware of Macrovision but surely its not on all VCD`s - do the DVD players themselves have Macrovision protection built into them which prevents any kind of copying at all? If so, why do they supply an extra scart socket for connection to a video recorder.
By the way I`ve got a Philips DVD711 and have a direct scart connection to the Video.
Thanks in advance for any advice/help as this is relly doing my head in.

Cheers,

Richard

Macrovision is built into the players, but shoudl only be turned on when the DVD asks for it.

This doesn`t sounds like a MV problem though. Are these region 1 or region 2 discs? Very few videos wil record an NTSC signal. See if you can force your player to convert to PAL.

Thanks for the advice but I`m sure its not a PAL or NTSC problem as the same occurs with Regions 1 and 2 and VCDs.
The player is set up for PAL as well - no problem there.
Be grateful for any other ideas.

Cheers

Rich, the problems are macro related. Try http://www.dvdupgrade.co.uk to see if there is a mod that switches Macro off (ie disables it)
At the end of the day, discs are software, players are hardware. If your hardware ain`t right the software won`t respond (blimey I AM a computer nerd...)
Good luck, mate...:-)

Rich the problem may a new version of macrovision, there are several comments on the R1 version of DVD reviewer. There are some devices known as video enhancers /stabilizers that can be inserted between your dvd and video. Apparently some of the later versions still work with this new macrovision. However this new version is only activated by a limited number of discs. One possible cause may be connecting to your video via the scart socket. Particularly if you have your DVD set to RGB. Try using the composite video output from your DVD and plug this into the video input of your video.
