help please...surround sound

mullyy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 21st August 2001, 16:07

q1.my surround speakers connect to my sub then connections from the sub into the back of the 5.1 connections on the back of the dvd player, which is connected by scart to the tv...how do i get sound from normal tv programmes to go through my speakers.

q2.with the 5.1 speakers connected could i also leave the speakers in which are connected to my hifi..i.e sound through 7 speakers...or could this be to much and blow the speakers or the dvd player.

glad if anyone can help

1. You could run a normal stereo phono lead from the line outs of your telly to a suitable input on your 5.1 amp. That`s what I`ve done and it does ensure that you get prologic when watching normal telly programmes.

2. Not actually sure what you`re suggesting here. You have a 5.1 setup and a hi-fi (stereo) setup? Two separate systems? How can you "blow" the speakers of one or the other, or the dvd? Are you proposing connecting them in some way? How?

the speakers and sub r connected to the 5.1 connections on the back and at the same time i can connect my hifi to the audio input output connections onthe back of my dvd player.so i can have my 5.1 speakers on and my hifi on...so sound is coming through7 speakers.inc sub...but i was wondering if this would not be advisable

OK, you could do that. There wouldn`t be any risk to your dvd player or speakers. On the other hand, there`s no way you could guarantee phase integrity, as you are running through two entirely different amplifier circuits. You may get away with it and get the best of both worlds, or you my end up with a muddy, poorly defined sound.

Prologic is the only option if all you`ve got is a stereo sound source (TV, radio etc). On the other hand, if you`ve got (and heard) 5.1 you wouldn`t need to ask!

sometimes sounds like explosions sound pretty weak in the front speakers..saying that my speakers and sub all cost 80 quid..bush pro 300.
when i just used my hifi they semed pretty loud...5.1 is better for the extra speakers though

At last ! Someone who has the Bush pro 300 system !
Can you tell me what it`s like ?
Surround sound is a luxury that the girlfriend just does not agree with, so I`m looking at spending as little as possible, then I might upgrade later. The Bush system seems like a helluva lot for your money. What`s it like ? I don`t want/need window rattling voume. I just need acceptable volume but better effects.
Was it easy to connect up and get going ?
Any info would great. I see goodmans do a small surround set-up for £70 but it doesn`t have a sub, so the Bush is looking favourite. The wooden effect speakers will fit in with my decor better as well.
Cheers
