Cyberhome, Warfedable, Scan or Yelo... Which is a good one???

Pawan (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 17th August 2001, 23:06

Hi ! I am looking for my first DVD player. I am not really bothered with the built in Dolby / DTS decoder because I ultimately need to buy one. I am looking for an economical player which provides good picture and good sound using a Dolby Pro Logic Widescreen TV (to be frank Philips 28"). I have looked at various sites, reviews for above players and am a bit confused. Your advise / help would be appreciated.
Thanks v much in advance.
Cheers

HI i suppose it all depends on what type of system requirements you need, your price range etc.
I personally own a Wharfedale 750 that I got from Tesco in Dec 2000 for £180.I found this to be a great picture, sound etc but I suppose we all have different opinions on different models.
My mate has just got herself a Dvd player from Asda for £99.99 and it plays vcds as well.
You can get models that play dvds that are multi regional(if not there is probably a hack for iton this website),play vcds,mp3 compatible, karaoke cds etc.
It all depends on what you want to use on the dvd player.
Im sure if you stipulate what exactly you want from a dvd player then someone will point you in the right direction.
My best bet is to read reviews on differnt models and go by what people say about them.If you like what you hear and can afford it then go for that model as long as it lives upto what you require from a dvd player.
Hope Ive been a help to you.

I bought a Cyberhome 512 - basically because it was multiregion (or can be made so - don`t buy the upgrade disc from Richer - you can download it from the web and burn your own CDR - if you haven`t got the facility you can have my CDR I burnt - my machine is upgraded, so I have no use for it!). It plays VCDs, MP3 etc , and can be Macrovision disabled (with a 3 year old son, I`d prefer it if he used a VCR copy of a film, rather than the original DVD!!) - whether I use these facilities is another matter.

It was also one of the cheapest players, and wehn going into a new format like DVD, there`s nothing worse than having a shiny expensive player, with only 2 DVDs to play on it. My theory is that if the machine lasts 2 years, it`s done well, and there will be all sorts of whizzy models around then to upgrade to, should I need to.
Can`t say how it compares with the other models mentioned, but I know the Wharfedale gets good reviews on this site. The Scan I think has had it`s ups and downs, but I believe (from readign here) that the latest versions are OK.
As far as DD etc, nowadays it seems that anything above the very basic models has the converter on board. I hope to go the whole hog with amp etc soon, but for the moment am pleased with the sound with the output through my existing hifi.
If you can stretch to it, the Toshibas get good reviews, and are meant to play audio CDs well - if you`re going for a full system, it could then run as your main CD player too - remember that most AV amps have built in tuner.
I have tried the Cyberhome playing audio CDs, and although I have been pleased with the sound from movies, the sound from audio CDs is a bit uncontrolled (I have a good Audio CD machine to compare it with, though).

One thing I would say, though, is make sure you get a Multiregion player, capable of handling RCE discs (region 1 - America - with extra encoding to try and stop multiregion players playing them). When you start lookign around, you will see that the American and Australian sites not only have stuff a lot earlier than we do (in some cases), but also have some excellent bargains.

hi, I`ve had a cheapo alba 103 from asda, a samsung 511 also from asda and currently have cyberhome 512. All of these players are multiregion but i returned the samsung to asda as it didn`t play cdr`s or cdr-w.the alba the tray would just keep opening and closing everytime you went to load a disk.
My advise is that if you can find a player you like in asda them buy it from them as they give a free 3year guarantee (money back or exchange-when i took my samsung back after 6 months, i just said the sound goes a bit funny and they gave me a full refuend no questions asked).
After having the cyberhome now for a couple of months i think that in hindsight i would probably get the scan as the cyberhome has froze on me (read earlier post).

hope this helps

mungosdad,

My Cyberhome 512 kept crashing after it had been on for over an hour - overheating I reckon.
I took it back to Richer sounds and got a replacement a few months ago.
Had no problems since.
I recently had a marathon X-files season one session - the player was in use for over 7 hours continous and no problems.

hmm , I am a Scan owner , the player itself is very good and plays
nearly all disc formats , my only gripe is with SCAN customer services.
Because they suck big time , ( took 4 months to get satisfaction after they supplied me with faulty goods ( oh and I had to pay all postal charges ) )

Got the scan myself, am using there firmware thats VF (video freindly) so not only can I play all cds/dvds I can play any region and disable macro.

Since its got 8/10 in just about every possible review out there and its always had picture/sound at 9/10 or 8/10 in each review:)

Cant argue with that really!

I bought some computer equipment from scan, had a problem wiuth one item, and have spend MONTHS trying to get through to customer services - the auto support facility on their their site (where you enter the details of the problem etc) NEVER gets responded to.... get held in phone queue for ages..... won`t be buying from them again.. too late for me to be able to return my useless item now.

Yeah I heard there CS is plain awful.......

For some its ok but most not really.

I paid 100 quid for my Scan and its a new model as well and fully working cant complain but too actually buy direct from them is questionable!
