I need a new budget(ish) VCR - Any suggestion in the £100 - £150 region?

Please no Hitachi/Alba/Bush suggestions.

I have recently returned an Aiwa HV-FX8200 as its picture quality was worse than my mums Alba! Strange this is Aiwa usually get top review marks for picture quality. Guess theyre going down market.

I need:

NICAM stereo.
NTSC Playback (On PAL is OK)
Long Play.
4 head (6 head)
2 SCART`s (plus front coaxial would be nice & RGB SCART if it exists)
Most important is superb picture quality.

If your machine matches the above specs and youre please with the picture, pls post make & model.

I`m getting desperate!

Thanx JB,

Will search out the Tosh.

I must say I always buy electronic products with excellent 5 STAR reviews but find theyre sh*t when I plug`em in.

I dont believe these reviews anymore. Perhaps Ttrading Standards should look into them. There`s a major conspiracy regard budget hardware that should be exposed.

Yelo / Aiwa / Hitachi need their a*ses`kikin

You cant go wrong with any of these Sony budget VCRs - both are Nicam with good picture and recording options:

SLV-SE70 / SLV-SE80

My brother has the Sony SLV-SE710, which seems very good and fulfils all your requirements. Its RRP is £179.99 but you can probably get it cheaper if you phone around.

Home Entertainment recently did a round up of budget VCRs (last month`s issue)

Top decks recommended were Toshiba V711, JVC HRJ680 and LG BM999NI

My mate at work was after one, so we hopped online, checked out http://www.empiredirect.co.uk who had the JVC for just under £120, rang the local John Lewis store, who price-matched it, threw in a 2 year guarantee and my mate took it home later that day - he`s well happy with it.

Thanx Guys,

Clayts: Will check out Home Entertainment.

I am still picking up JVC particles (£300 HR-A630) from my carpet where it met a timely death from chip failure and Mr. Sledgehammer!

I agree JVC pictures are top notch though. Hmmm. Do I go back to a brand that did the dirty on me?

Probably.

Thanx for the contrib all.

Carrot dont bother checking out Home entertainment, as they rate the best non SVHS vcr as the Hitachi FX980.

And I second that VCR of the Year by 3 different magazines.

I have one but at 200 its out of your budget.

remember we are watching you.

Panny, Tosh & Hitachi make the best VCR`s but philips name is improving.

Duke:

First of all. I am not Carrot. Believe me, please.

Actually its not the name `Hitachi` that puts me off them.

Its crap like the Hitachi VT-MX905 VCR.
See page 524 of Argos`s spring/summer catalogue.

It even makes Philips VCR with analogue clock seem tasteful.
