Targa DP-5100x from Lidl

donka (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 9th March 2005, 12:08

The Targa DP-5100x is back on sale at Lidl from this Monday, 14th March for £50.
I just wanted to ask if anyone with this player can comment on it and specifically the DivX and Xvid playback.

I have watched many movies in both DivX format and XviD format on the 5100x, and I am impressed EVERY time I watch one. I`d recommend this machine for this purpose. BTW, if you have high capacity data cards (like a 1GB SD card for example) you can have the DivX movie on that and the 5100x can play the movie straight from the card. Again the quality is excellent.

Thanks for the update - I`m impressed it will read movies from a memory card as I do that with my Pocket PC. I will be picking one of these up for sure.

Don`t forget that the quality of the DivX movie when it is playing on your 5100x is dependant on the quality of the original recording. What I mean is the 128MB or 256MB movies you watch on your PPC are not encoded to high enough level to properly enjoy on the 5100x. You can watch them, but it looks blocky. When you`ve got the movie encoded to take about 700MB and stick it on a CD (this is what I tend to do), they tend to play excellently, looking very clear.

This is what I do - 1 movie per 700mb disc although I have a couple of 1gb SD cards that I can use. I also have a copy of my movies at about 100-120mb per film for on my PPC so I can take a few with me on trips. It will also be handy to use an old CF card to put WMA audio tracks on for playing instead of burning to disc - saves a bit of time.

I`ve never attempted subtitles with my DivX movies, so I can`t really answer that - but yes, it plays XviD movies with no problem.
