Blank DVD+R Disc question

brizey (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 12th January 2005, 22:36

Hi, me yet again,

I need to buy a few discs, and I`ll probably buy a large pack of some description, 25, 50 or 100. There seem to be loads of cheap ones about. Are they safe to buy, and is the quality OK.

I have seen red, orange, blue, yellow and all at different prices. Normally averaging out at approx £20 for 50
I have a Matsui DVDR 100.
Has anybody had good results from a certain brand ? How much are they ? and where did you get them from ?

Thanks,

Brisey. :) :)

Brisey

TBH you should be able to get DVD+R`s for about £17 for 50.
I use Datawrite DVD-R on our Lite-On 5005B and they have never let me down. I realise they are not the same format but I would have no hesitation in recommending Datawrite as they are reliable and the price of their discs are very reasonable. So, if you can, give Datawrite DVD+R`s a try and you should be impressed as I do not think they will let you down.
Another poster suggested http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk as a potential source for discs so have a wee look at their site.

Okay, first off, I never use DVD+, but I have been burning dvds for a while now, & my retailer of choice is SVP

Bear in mind that with blank media, you get what you pay for.
Lots of people use the cheapest media they can find & have no problems, but every time I've tried really cheap discs I`ve had problems.
A spindle of 25 for the better discs will set you back between £6 & £8
P+P for 4 spindles is about £5

Depends on where you are, of course, but there are plenty of places that are non-mail order you can source discs from at these kind of prices. Computer fairs are always a good source-even the smallest fairs will have at least half a dizen people trying to flog discs so it keeps prices very keen. I often stock up when I go to the huge fair at Bowlers in Manchester, but I`ve found a store in Wavertree in Liverpool which I go past a couple of times a week that are always very keen on price-I can buy a hundred cheap and cheerfuls for around £14/100 (x4 speed) but I generally buy some Ritek dye ones for around £19/100. This guy was really good about taking a bunch of re-writables back off me that my LG recorder simply wouldn`t work with, but you should be fine with any write once discs.

If you want something a bit more `mainstream` Maplins often have pretty decent offers on their blanks-I think they worked out about £28/100 last time I checked (It was a buy 50, get 50 free offer).

I`ve been getting spindles of 25 -R from ebuyer for about £5-6 incl VAT + del. I`ve had the Datawrite yellow and Bulkpaq orange and had no problems yet with either. I have an LG GSA 4082 B burner in the PC and a Panasonic DMR E55. +R will prob be about the same price.

He might be better off getting 25 to start with - to make sure he can find a compatible disk. Sure he won`t want 100 coasters!
