Purchase of French DVD player

MFC999 (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 14th May 2001, 20:26

Advice please. Is it possible to buy a DVD player in France and use it in the UK, or are the tv settings different (Pal/Ntsc etc.) I am going across soon and wondered whether it was an option??? Thanks

As far as I know, France use SECAM. Don`t think many UK TV support this apart from Philips.

Films are recorded on french dvds as pal and then converted to secam by the player so if youre tv isnt secam compatable you might not be able to watch it. I dont know how compatable secam is with pal since they both have the same number of lines and frame rate

DVD players in France are still more expensive that over here, but they are coming down and will soon be the same as over here.

Disks are a different matter, the disks are a lot cheaper, they are reigon 2, they come out a lot sooner than the UK and they are usually in multiple languages.
