Just wait until the new Panasonics come out. Already the King of recorders, the new ones have just about everything. Don`t know price but it`s worth paying a little extra for a whole load more.

Lite On 5006 should be inside that budget-writes to either of the major DVD formats (+ and - ) and also to CD-r, RGB in and out too. Lots of on line help for this range too as they are very popular machines-lots of firmware upgrades to add even more functionality.

The new `Humble Pie` range from Panasonic-unfortunately they`ve been stuck on the docks in Tokyo harbour for the last two years- (i.e. - they`ve missed the boat!! :) )

The Lite On 5006 sounds pretty good with it recording on anything but Ram, is this definately worth investing in or is the quality not great?

£160 is cutting it fine. You would need to go downmarket to Liteon or the supermarket unknowns.
£10 more would get you a Pioneer 220 or Panasonic E55.Another £20 would get it multiregion. The new Panny`s are unknown pricewise and months away,so the Pioneer is your best bet if you can`t wait.
PS-Have a look on Google for Philips dvd recorder problems and see what pops up
