About this user: Having great trouble with finding a portable DVD player that will play the DVD-RW discs that I already have. I bought 2 from Argos which were taken back for a refund and now I`ve got a Mustek PL407H which according to all the websites I`ve looked at, should play DVD-RW discs but it won`t play mine, and it doesn`t actually say on the box that it will be DVD-RW.

RE: Sony DVD/VCR -R +R -RW +RW etc.??????

Oh I`m glad it`s not only me that`s confused. I`ve got two VCR/DVDR combis which will record on DVD-R and DVD-RW. I bought a portable DVD player which would play DVD-R but only DVD-RW if recorded in the V mode, not the VR mode.

I did some research, it`s a bit like the old VHS/Beta thing years ago. The +R and +RW discs are apparently newer and more reliable types of disc but not supported by all machines.

Re the 2 different modes of recording on -RW dics, if you record something on an RW disc in the VR mode (which gives you the editing facilities), you can`t play those on a portable player, at least I haven`t found one which will play them even when the manufacturer says it will play -RW discs. On my combis, I have the option of recording on -RW discs in the VR mode or the Video mode, but the Video mode doesn`t give you full editing facilities (ie the ability to edit out adverts and unwanted parts of your recording).

In order to record a film that I want to keep, and edit out the adverts but still be able to play it on a portable DVD player, I have to record it on a DVD-RW in the VR mode, then edit out the adverts, then copy it onto a VHS tape and then copy it back onto a DVD-R. What a palava. Why can`t they make these flipping discs compatible with all machines?

Your handbook should tell you which types of discs your machine is compatible with.

RE: Empire Direct - Thoughts please

I bought a VCR/DVDR combi from Empire Direct. No problems at all. Very quick delivery.

RE: unbeatable

I was hunting for a portable VCR/DVDR combi. Unbeatable had it at £219 but Empire Direct had it £20 cheaper.

I e-mailed Unbeatable to tell them I`d found it cheaper elsewhere, and they e-mailed back to say they would match the price AND knock off another 10%.

I`d already ordered the DVD player from Empire Direct though so couldn`t take them up on their offer.

Portable DVD players that play DVD-RW

I have recorded some films onto DVD-RW discs in the VR mode (so that I could edit out the adverts and rubbish etc).

However I want to buy myself a portable DVD player and I`m having great trouble finding one that will play them. So far I`ve tried 3 (a Phillips, a Hitachi and a Mustek) which say they play DVD-RW but didn`t want to play mine. Obviously they only play DVD-RW if they are recorded in the V mode (which means I don`t have the editing facilities when I record them).

Has anyone actually got a portable player which does play DVD-RW recorded in the VR mode, or am I not going to get one?

Mustek PL407H

I bought one of these and received it today. I`m finding that it doesn`t play DVD-R discs that have been recorded on my JVC DVD recorder, the picture plays ok but the sound level keeps jumping from zilch to quite loud in waves. However it seems to play DVD-R discs which have been recorded on my other Sharp DVDR. Has anyone else experienced this, or is my player faulty?

RE: Portable DVD troubles.....

I also just bought a Mustek PL407H, received it today. However I`m disappointed because it won`t play the DVD-RW discs that I`ve recorded on my Sharp VCR/DVDR combi. I read reviews of this portable player before I bought it and they said that it did play DVD-RWs but it won`t play mine. Is it because I`ve recorded them in the VR mode and not the Video mode?

I do have a problem understanding all these compability issues. They don`t explain it very well do they? It seems that it will play DVD+RW discs but I can`t record on them on my Sharp DVDR.

Looks like I will have to transfer my DVD-RW discs onto VHS tape and then copy them back onto DVD-R which is a pain.

As a total beginner at DVD recording, I thought that DVDs were like VHS tapes and you could record them on any machine and play them back on any machine but this is far from the case. Perhaps when hoards of people start taking their machines back because of incompatibility problems, they will either explain it better or get their act together and start making machines which are compatible with each other.
