Page 1 of What DVD Player??
Hardware Forum
Hi All,
A common question im sure! My old Samsung 709 is dying (god rest its bits), I need the best DVD player I can for about £150. The Pioneer 575 appears to be well liked by most so should I just go for that?
My samsung suffers a little from, urm, not sure what the tehcnical term is but when playing `finding nemo`, where the colour of the sea goes from light to dark yuo can see the change is quite blockey and not smooth, posturising is it maybe?? I am told that there is no garentee newer players dont do this either?
I have just bought a Panasonic PM11 28 Wide TV which is great to me, have a decent Yamaha amp with good speakers too. Dont think the TV can do progressive scan (not totally sure what that is) as there is no component in on the TV? so dont know if i need all that stuff for the future or not?
Any thoughts? have DVD players come on a long way since my 709, or is it much of the same again just with different connections?
I am pretty much a novice at this!
Thanks!!
:) I think the pioneer is a great machine, it`s multiregion and has great sound

RE: What DVD Player??
hi there
i have a cambridge audio 77, absolutely love it. mum has toshiba 340 its fantastic also, both player are MR, play dvd-r/rw etc
Bought the Pioneer and been very happy with it so far. Had a bit of a problem the other day trying to a play an VCD (some photos we`d converted onto VCD). Brought up a menu asking if I wanted to browse the files or play as DIVX. Then discovered I`d put in the CD with the original photos - not the VCD! DUH!
One thing I don`t like is to go to a specific time point you need to go through a couple of menus. With the Wharfedale I could just type in the time point.
Has played everything I`ve thrown at it. DVD, DVD-R, SVCD, VCD and DIVX. Picture quality is good. Remote is nice and clear.
Haven`t bought the component cables yet, so output is just via the RGB Scart.
I`m sure there`s some more stuff it can do - maybe I should read the manual :D
I was seriously looking at the Pioneer 575 as my Pioneer DV505 is on her way out (I loved that machine - bought in 1998 £450. then and has played EVERYTHING).
However whilst looking at various reviews on the 575 the one in Home Cinema Choice says that it can play DVDR+ media - but if you look on the official Pioneer site and on retailers sites that stock it there is no mention of it able to play + media.
Anybody know if it can play + discs? Also I`m after a black one - anybody know who has black ones available? - my searches have only led me to silver ones.

Pricerunner shows 2 places with black ones - http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/sound-and-vision/vision/dvd-players/222089/prices. Don`t know what the companies are like though.
Don`t have any + disks to try in I`m afraid, but www.dvdrhelp.com seems to suggest it can play +
