Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

MarkGixer6 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 29th December 2004, 12:22

Hello all. Wonder if anyone knows how to solve this problem. I have a Philips DVDR-70 (version 051) recorder and I tried to record to a +R disc for the first time yesterday. When I came to watch the recording, the system would not display any info. I read the manual which advised to finalise the disc. Tried this, but cannot get into any system menu`s to do it. Contacted Philips who said update the software. No probs.. Done this, but still have same problem with that recording. Is there a way around this? Is it unviewable because it was recorded on the old software version? Does it mean it will be ok for future recordings. I don`t want to risk wasting another +R disc before I know what`s going on. Any advice is welcome.... Thanks.

Philips machines do this all the time.Replace it with a Pioneer/Panasonic/Toshiba (if you only had it for a while) or get a firmware update from Philips and flog it on ebay,or else just bin it,start again and forget Philips

Forget phelings as usual smart arse comment. On all DVD recorders the odd disc fails. Use another disc and record something else. You will probably find this one plays OK. If not take it back to where you got the machine from as its faulty.

Ok, I admit it, I have a Phillips DVDR70 (dons hard hat and jumps in bunker ready for incoming verbal abuse!)

Thanks for the advice. Actually, it was a gift and as I normally do my own research before I buy, it`s not something I would have bought myself. I`m thinking of selling it and buying a Panasonic DMR E55EBS DVD Recorder. This seems to be excellent value for money at £200. Would you recommend any alternatives?

i`d go for either a panny, pioneer, or jvc, the pioneer & jvc`s support -rw as well as ram/-r
but tbh my personal preference would be the panny, my DMR-E30 has been superbly reliable.

Gibbs-ypu don`t know what you are talking about.
Most machines have the odd disc go wrong, but only Philips could cock up on the first +R.It simply demonstrates the real good reason to avoid Philips at all times. The only ones who speak up for Philips are those who have bought them and don`t want to admit how stupid they were.
Take a look round any forums.
Those who speak out for Philips usually have only ever used Philips recorders.Luckily there are those of us who have used all formats and machines from Pioneer,Panasonic and Philips ,so we can genuinely use our experience to advise which way is the best.
How far does your expertise go Gibbsy?

Well, I`ve taken the plunge and ordered a JVC DRM10. I`m hoping for a big improvement. Thanks for the advice....

Certainly an improvement over Philips, but the JVC range lack RGB input. If you have a digital receiver,I hope it has s-video output

What`s RGB input for?
