RE: Panasonic DMR EH50 DIGA DVD

Thanks for the reply. I have already bought the Panny now. The offer for £335 was buy now pay later (at zero interest), so that suited me anyway. I can confirm that it is a great bit of kit. I haven`t needed to consult the instruction book yet, because the remote control, and on screen menus are so easy and logical to use (Philips should take note). Very happy with my purchase.

Panasonic DMR EH50 DIGA DVD

Just wondering about buying one of these for £335.
I need the multi format playback, as I have disks of various types.
Are there any other makes/models of comparible quality/price I should be looking at, or is this the best I can get for my money?

Cheers

RE: Which digital camera ?

Try http://www.steves-digicams.com/
Or
http://www.dcresource.com/

Both good review sites. A word of advice. Don`t get hung up on the mega pixel thing. There`s more to a digital camera than just how many mega pixels it is. Lots of good choice out there for £200.

RE: New Panny DVD Recorder Models

You`re absolutely right Emily. Makes you sick doesn`t it? They try to convince you that the model you bought last year is no use any more and may as well be junk. Go and purchase our new model if you have any self respect. Sales & marketing have a lot to answer for in my opinion. Consumerism at it`s ugliest...
Having said that, I`m gonna wait for the new models :-)

RE: New Panny DVD Recorder Models

Well the spec on the link I`ve posted says "The DMR-EH50 features a 100GB3 hard disk drive, offering users up to 177 hours4 of recording time."
Who knows....like Phelings says, it may well vary between regions. They may also change the spec, so they may be waiting to see how other manufacturers respond before committing to a final spec at this stage.

RE: New Panny DVD Recorder Models

SJ, read the details on the thread I posted, it tells you on there.

RE: New Panny DVD Recorder Models

Indeed. Marketing hype is one thing, reality is another.... BTW Phelings, belated thanks for your advice about not keeping the JVC DRM10 EK. Not having RGB in socket makes a huge quality difference on my tv. Also, the record quality was no better than the Philips DVR70 I have, in fact if anything, I`d say it was very slightly lower quality although it did have much better features. Anyway I sent it back and I`m glad I did. Can`t wait to get rid of the Philips though as it`s the most user unfriendly peice of hardware I`ve ever bought. The remote is so illogical it drives me mental...Anyway rant over.

New Panny DVD Recorder Models

Since there has been quite a bit of discussion of the arrival of these new models, I have posted a link to a recent (ish) press release from Panasonic. Looks like it could be May rather than March/April as previously quoted on this site...

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?storeId=11301&catalogId=13251&itemId=87508&modelNo=Content12302004011220505&surfModel=Content12302004011220505

Actually, I just this second got an email reply from Panasonice to say the DMREH50 will be available April/May, so they are being a little vague on the exact timing. Seems a shame that they`re not available now, because I`ll be out riding my m`bike in most of my spare time, come summer 8)

Before anyone asks me why I`m waiting (Phelings etc) it`s because I already have some ram disks, +R(W) and -R(W), so I do need a player that can use them all. Not loyalty (mislaced or otherwise) to Panasonic....
Cheers
Mark

RE: Progressive Scan?

So if I understand this correctly, does this mean that you cannot benefit from progressive scan DVD players/recorders on a CRT TV in the UK? Which is what most people will be viewing on. I`ve been browsing, but so far haven`t found a single CRT TV with component in sockets for sale on `tinternet...Don`t they sell them here? Or is it that component input is no significant advantage over RGB?

RE: iPod battery life?

I`ve got a 20GB I-pod, and I`ve also noticed the battery doesn`t last 12 hrs. I think Apple must test the battery life with optimal settings etc to get the 12 hrs. In every day `real` use, you`re never going to get that long. I recon from between 6 and 10 hrs depending on how you use it and how long you leave it between charging. Since I have never wanted to use it for anything like that long in one go, it`s never bothered me. Tell you what though it annoys me how easily they scratch up. I got a case from the States which has put a stop to any further scuffs, but I`ve not seen one in the UK. It seems to get scatched even when there is nothing else in your pocket! If you do see a case, buy it, because it will look second hand in no time if you don`t.

DVD remote sat contoller probs

Not sure if anyone will know this, but I`ll ask anyway. Just got my JVC DR-M10S, and the satellite remote contoller device doesn`t seem to work. This is a pain, as I will have to leave the sky box on the correct channel for timer record.
I`ve followed all the instructions without any joy. Anyone else had this sort of problem, or know a fix for it. I`m wondering if the problem lies with the digibox settings...

Sky box is Thompson Digibox Version 2.64 (came with the installation in 2003).

By the way, I can`t get the handset to tune into the sky box frequency either.

Thanks in advance if anyone replies.

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

What would you recommend? £250 is max budget really.

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

Think I must be looking at the wrong version of the machine. Just checked again and it says it has got scart. That`ll save me buying leads anyway.

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

That`s weird because I`m looking at the PDF manual for the DR-M10 which I downloaded from JVC, and there are no scart ports anywhere to be seen.

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

I think you`re wrong on that point. The JVC DRM10 doesn`t have any scart ports (input or output), and my sky box and TV both have scart. Therefore I need scart to s-video and s-video to scart cables I think.

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

Dammit. Even getting these cables isn`t straight forward. I need scart to s-video (sky box to DVD) then s-video to scart (DVD to TV). The cables seem to be directional, which is fine, but some have s-video with 2 phono sockets as well, some without phono (just scart to s-video). My question is, do I need ones with phono as well, or is the audio signal carried with the s-video cable normally anyway?

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

Thanks Phelings. You`re right about the hasle factor. I`m now faced with buying 2 scart to s-video cables One to connect my sky box to the DVD and one to connect my tv to the dvd recorder. This is gonna cost me about £50 (for decent cables)! Since the recorder was only £192 (inc delivery) it`s not too bad, as I didn`t really see anything else around that price with the same spec. However, maybe I should have gone for the Panny....Can`t understand why JVC have no RGB input. Seems stupid.

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

Thanks for all the advice Phelings. As you can tell, I`m no electronics buff... One last question please. How do I go about connecting my sky digibox up to my new JVC DVD recorder then? I presume there must be a way. Is there some kind of converter cable I can buy? Cheers in advance.

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

Well, I`ve taken the plunge and ordered a JVC DRM10. I`m hoping for a big improvement. Thanks for the advice....

RE: Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

Thanks for the advice. Actually, it was a gift and as I normally do my own research before I buy, it`s not something I would have bought myself. I`m thinking of selling it and buying a Panasonic DMR E55EBS DVD Recorder. This seems to be excellent value for money at £200. Would you recommend any alternatives?

Philips DVDR70 Recording to +R problems...

Hello all. Wonder if anyone knows how to solve this problem. I have a Philips DVDR-70 (version 051) recorder and I tried to record to a +R disc for the first time yesterday. When I came to watch the recording, the system would not display any info. I read the manual which advised to finalise the disc. Tried this, but cannot get into any system menu`s to do it. Contacted Philips who said update the software. No probs.. Done this, but still have same problem with that recording. Is there a way around this? Is it unviewable because it was recorded on the old software version? Does it mean it will be ok for future recordings. I don`t want to risk wasting another +R disc before I know what`s going on. Any advice is welcome.... Thanks.
