if you`re trying to copy comercial dvd`s then you probably need to compress them first, try dvd shrink ;)

i`d consider trying another burning prog (i find nero the best) if that don`t work i`d change the drive, i know many people on here like the lite-on stuff but i`ve never had anything but trouble with em :( i`m currently using an NEC3500 dual layer 16x multi-format drive and not had any probs at all, and you can get this model for under £50

Edit= & if you`re copying disc-to-disc on the fly, make sure the drives are on different ide cables, otherwise this will restrict the burn speeds etc.

Be very careful with that advice... although I seem to remember Nero warns about that (until you say "don`t tell me again..") very few people can put optical drives on different IDE channels. One thing you shouldn`t do is have an optical drive on the same channel as a hard disk or the speed slows down to the speed of the slowest item - the optical one..

partly true ;) if you put an optical drive with you`re boot drive (usually the C: drive) it can slow things down, for the same reason copying disc-to-disc causes probs if the drives are on the same cable, the reason for this is that devices connected to the same ide channel can only read/write back to themselves at a much slower speed (about 10x in standard cd terms) but if the optical drive is not in use it won`t effect the hard disc, so if i`m setting up a pc that does not have raid, i`ll put the burner (ide-1- on the same cable as the boot disc (ide-0-) and the dvd/cd reader on the slave ide channel (ide-2-) and provided you only use the burner for "burning" it shouldn`t cause the pc to boot slowly or have any other side effects However if you are creating an image to the C:drive first then it will be slower when writing the image back.

the above is dependant on having a "decent" motherboard, some old pc-chips & msi motherboards will run like s*** if set up like this :(

of course getting a RAID motherboard or a pci RAID card (£15) would make all that irrelevent & if set up properly (stripped drives) the pc will boot much faster anyway :D i allways use raid if possible & wouldn`t be without it now.

EDIT=and make sure DMA mode is enabled thats Very important (tho if using XP it should not matter as xp seems to handle DMA automaticly)

Personally I think the days of not having 2 cd drives on the same IDE channel are pretty much gone.. Granted, it used to cause problems (the old buffer underrun was the bane of my life) but with the buffer underrun protection and decent drive buffers available now, I don`t think there`s a problem.
Although my DVD burner is on a PCI IDE card so it`s separate anyway :o ;)

but the speed restriction`s still apply due to the physical limits with the ide technology, so the problem of speed & transfer will allways plague this type of connection & buffer underun won`t help as it`s still got to read & write the info back up & down the same channel, but as you say, a seperate card (or raid mobo) to add more ide channels is Allways the way to go, as this makes the problem irrelevent (unless you need more than 4 ide devices)
