That`s quite an interesting issue, `cos normally the immediate response is "buy this one from Asda, superdug, Richer Sounds etc". Which is what I`d say, i.e. the Asda Pacific is v popular.

but would last years £100 Toshiba from a mate `cos he just bought a recorder be better?

In answer to the original post, I bought a cheapy Acoustic Solutions Richer Sounds one, does the job (plays cds, cdrws, vcd, mp3 cd, pic cd, dvd-r, RCE Dvd), but in future I my buy one from a more reputable make for build quality

They all `do` 5.1,in that they will all send a 5.1 signal to a 5.1 amp.
If you want a built-in 5.1 decoder though,because you don`t have a 5.1 amp,that`s a different thing.

If it`s the former then the Pacific 1002 from Asda is good and now looks good as well.
Used to be helluva ugly.
Now a nice looking slim thing.

If it`s the latter,I haven`t a clue.

You want options ?
When spending £30 ???
:/ ;)

By the way,the Pacific isn`t MR ou of the box but it`s dead easy to do using the remote.
I can`t remember how though.
Refer to the Region hacks forum.

LOL...I know I don`t have much in the way of options...I don`t mind going up to £40.00 (Big spender...lol...)....but I was wondering anyway :) It`s for my Nan you see, she doesn`t need bells and whistles.

I`ve just seen the hack, seems easy enough...thanks :)

It`s around £34 for the 1002.
They do have cheaper ones though including a very neat wee thing made by `durabrand`.
It`s tiny.
I haven`t the foggiest how good it is or isn`t.

Your nan want`s multiregion ?
She`s a hip old bird isn`t she ?

:D ;)

Unless your gran has a Wega, LCD, Plasma or something...just get a £30 one from a supermarket...they`ll all be much of a muchness and will probably be dead easily hacked and will play virtually anything. The reason for that is that the cheapo makes tend to be made from PC components. They`ll also be easier to take back if you have a problem (just don`t tell them you`ve tried to hack it!)

However, if your gran has a decent AV set up (respect to her!), buy a second hand branded one off e-bay. You`ll easily get one for that budget; my mate just sold a Toshiba DVD for £30 that he bought 3 years ago for £300. You`ll probably get better picture and sound. I`m currently selling my Samsung multi-region on e-bay..but I`m not trying to push it to you ....honest guv! I have had branded makes and supermarket ones so can speak from experience.
