Page 1 of Philips dvdr70 v dvdr610

Hi there

I recently got a new dvdr70 from Tescos, however it turned out to be faulty. I took it back and they didn`t have any of the dvdr70s left so they replaced it with a dvdr610.

Can anyone tell me if there are any differences between these 2 machines. The person at Tescos said that the dvdr610 was a later version.

Is there anything that the dvdr610 can`t do that the dvdr70 could or vise versa?

The 610 is the new basic model DVD recorder from Philips. It`s roughly the same as the 70 with maybe one or two tweaks. Reliability`s about the same as well from what I hear.

Hi.

I`m pretty sure the only feature difference is the DVDR610`s ability to play JPeG CDs. That`s a major annoyance: My sister-in-law, who lives in France, can`t view my JPGs on her DVDR75. (The only difference between the 70 and the 75 is the firewire port.)

I`m prepared to be corrected if anyone knows differently.

My next door neighbour has had the Philips DVDR610 for some weeks now. He loves it. The quality of the recordings is great and he can use it with Sky no problem. It even seems to be able to record a Sky channel he isn`t watching (which I didn`t think was possible).

Another thing I`ve noticed, I can create SVCDs using Nero (converting mpg files on my PC) and while I can`t seem to play them on my Pioneer 656A DVD player I can play them on the DVDR610.

It seems to be a great player but I assume only region 2??

Anyway, Tesco are selling these for £200 and if it stays reliable (and I have read elsewhere that this is not guaranteed) it will be a good buy.

I have a DVDR75 and a DVDR610. I must say the 75 seems a more solid unit and I`ve had no problems with it at all (which is more than I can say for the 880 it replaced!).
The 610 seems a bit flimsy by comparison, and I haven`t got used to the menu system or the tiny remote yet - but it seems to record fine, and since updating the firmware, the fan problem has gone away.
Any 70s or 75s around now will perhaps be factory returns or similar, so may have a bit of "history". The 610 is obviously a newer model. Comet are doing them for £200 as well, and you can probably get all sorts of TV package deals with a 610 thrown in for good measure.
Personally I would go for a 70 or 75 if you could find one that works reliably.
I was amazed to see my local Dixons trying to sell an 880 for £230!!

Just noticed a slight irritation. My 75 will not read edits made on the 610, so you still end up with the adverts etc you`ve attempted to edit out. You would have thought that the two machines would have been compatible in that respect. Rather confirms my feeling that the two machines seem quite different and have a different feel to them.
