MP3 on Lecson?

James Day (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 2nd April 2001, 19:37

Several people have said on these forums that the Lecson DVD-900 does play MP3s. I`ve tried playing MP3s recorded on CD-R disks in my Lecson without much success: It goes through the motions with CD-ROM formatted disks with MP3s on them: The on-screen display recognises the CD as an MP3, and the disk plays (i.e. a track number appears and the time counter increments). BUT: no sound comes out. My Lecson sucessfully plays CD-R and CD-RW audio CDs. Can it be I`m using the wrong bitrate or something like that?
Any feedback will be welcome!
Thanks,
James

Mine worked fine on bitrates upto 196 and beyond, although it does not handle variable bitrate. Having said that, even with variable bitrate, some noise did still come out of the machine.

How is you machine connected ? Are you playing through your telly or an external AMP. I was just playing through my telly via scart.

I`m playing out through the Left and Right RCA sockets on the back, connected to my main audio amp. Also the coax and optical outputs are connected to my minidisc deck. With all of the same sttings on the Lecson, if I just put in an audio CD-RW, I get satisfactory outputs, so it seems to be more to do with the fact it is an MP3 rather than the type of CD, or the output used from the Lecson. I tried the experiment with the original MP3s (28kB/s) and also used the MP3 output plug-in in WinAmp to generate MP3 files at different bit rates up to 56kB/s.
So I`m puzzled!

The reason I thought it may be the outputs is because you said that it said the time counter was incrementing. It looks like the player `thinks` it is playing a MP3.

Just out of interest, try turning on your telly and see if there is any sound output from there. It should also say `MP3` on the screen in the top left hand corner.

Yes, it does say "MP3" on the TV screen, but there is no sound output from the TV. I cross-checked, and the sound does come out of the TV with an Audio CD-RW (I never checked that before as I always use my hifi for sound).

As you suggest, the sound paths all work OK, as it is ok for dvds and audio cds, And the player thinks it is succesfully playing MP3s.

Still confused? I know I am!

I`ll try mine again tonight to see if there are any other settings.

The only other (very obvious) things to check are :

1. Is the volume on the DVD player turned up !
2. Do the MP3`s play OK on your PC.

Also, I`ve only tried with a CDR, not a CDRW.

Have you tried changing tracks whilst it is `playing` ?

Still no success, but I`ve tried some more things:

Burnt a new CD-RW in one session and closed it.
Reset the DVD player to the factory defaults.
It still plays audio CDs ok, but no MP3s.
The mp3 files on the disk do play ok on the pc.
The audio on the lecson seems ok: Audio CDs, CD-rs and CD-RWs play ok. The TV display when I press the volume button on the remote says "32".

I noticed these points also (for disks with MP3s on them, audio CDs are ok and perform as expected):
I can play the next track by pressing the >>¦ button on the player and on the remote, but I get the "hand" display if I keep it pressed to "fast forward".
I can select the track to play with the 0-9 buttons on the remote.
The track number display (on the TV and the player) always shows 09, irrespective of how many track or mp3 files I have put on the disk.
I can`t adjust the volume from the lecson: The TV display shows a bar type display and says "32", but I can`t find any way of changing it!

The only remaining thing I can think of is that either I have a duff DVD player, or there is something wrong with my mp3 files.

Thanks for your help and feedback so far!

sorry, but MP3 is not my domain.
But can anybody tell me if the zoom function can be enable when playing a PAL disc. According to the instruction booklet, zoom funtion only works with NTSC disc. I have tried zooming with a PAL disc and only managed "zoom 1" . Zoom 2 and 3 are only activated with a R1 disc. Rather bizarre for a machine sold on the European market.

Here I come with a solution to your problem... (Well I hope).

For a start, If MP3 shows on your TV screen, that means that your CD (with MP3) is recognised by your DVD.

I think your problem is to do with the connexions:

- You can`t have any digital output when playing MP3. Digital out will only be activated with "proper" digital sources (ie DVD or audio CD).
- To make sure everything works ok, try listening to your MP3s through your TV (scart). Sound will probably be s*** but you should have something.
- Check your "Setup" when there are no disk in the player. There is something there that might help you but I can`t remember what.

Well, let me know exactly with what wireing you have tried your MP3, and what are your setings

About buttons functions when playing MP3s :
You just can`t fast forward or rewind. You can only skip songs up or down and input a song number (+play).

About MP3 files:
For some reasons your files` name can`t be more then 60ish caracters long (if do, your DVD900 will just not recognise it). And VBR MP3 are ears killers.

Other then that it works perfectly with me. I am sure we will sort you out. No reasons why (unless your player is f***ed, which does not seems).

Same basic issue for me - Lecson detects that it is MP3, shows right number of tracks and track durations .. but no sound.
I can output CD-Audio/DVD through Scart to TV, but nothing for MP3.

Could this be a question of firmware revisions?
One of the original promises was that firmware updates by CD would be available.
Anyone know how to check the version that is currently installed - we could then compare versions and see what is in the field.
[bought mine before December 2000]
