Scan 2000 DVD player problems please help

Sean Williams (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 13th March 2001, 15:50

Dear all

I have had a Scan 2000 DVD player since October last year. Overall I was happy with it. However now on some recent DVD titles I am getting some weird results.

Region 2 Final Destination pixelates after the main menu. Region 1 Me Myself & Irene and Disney`s Dinosaur. Throughout the film I get a small transparent box appearing, if I stop and then restart the DVD it disappears for a while.

I am interested to know if anyone else has experienced these problems. My DVD player is hooked up to my video with macrovision disabled. Could this have something to do with a new level of copy protection. I have no other choice than going through the video as my TV does not have any scart sockets.

I have had a look at the SSW but got different results to the documentation available from this forum.

My SSW window looks like this can anyone tell me what firmware version I am running.

CUSTOM ID SCN
MAIN VER 00000150
NAV VER 000009CE
PWD 00000000
CLOCK 00000438
RUNTIME 00023745
N SETUP 00000001
S SETUP 00000002
RESULT 00000002

That is all. Is my player`s firmware upgradable? Will it fix the problems I am having? What is the best version to go up to?

Thanks in advance.

Bad news Sean

Version 1.50 cant be upgraded unfortunatly.

The good news is that it is still under warranty so there is a very good chance scan will replace it for a latest model.

Email yellen[at]ku.oc.nacs

and tell him about your`e situation he will probably sort it out for you.

Hope that helps

So it`s not just me then!

I bought mine in October last year and it has the same problem - you may have seen my message. I spoke to Scan TS today and they are organising a drop and pick for tomorrow.

I did hook mine up thru the video for a while due to a crap TV, but a simple remedy was to buy a 28" widescreen. Wahey!

I can`t really say Scan are that bad with their CS at all - just don`t phone them from a mobile ;-)

Check out the new forum anyhows, and you will find firmware upgrades there, if your replacement player ever needs it.

I tried to watch Final Destination last night on my scan and i had the same problem but fixed it.
I did not know at the time it was R2 as i had borrowed it but i changed the settings from PAL to NTSC and hey presto it worked. And it is a R2 disc.Strange but true
I don`t know what version my scan is but i bought it in November last year.

I have the same player as you and it has the same version firmware too.
I can`t play Seven even though it plays fine on my PC DVD. You don`t have it do you? I was hopeing that there was a problem with the firmware and not my matchine.

It may be a software problem...let me explain.

Dear Sean

I am not familiar with your machine..but I am familiar with the problem. I work for JVC and we have experienced software issues with some of our units.

I am not technical but I can tell you that the disc formatting by different software manufacturers is not regulated and the different machines on the market cannot play every disc manufactured. We have noted the different spine #s off of certain discs that exhibit problems with our units. The symptoms are freezing of the movie and pixelization. We have a few "reset" procedures in place and have UPgrade IC`s for some of our units but until the industry regulates DVD manufacturing...people who own many different DVD players will experience these issues from time to time. Some DVD owners may not be able to play one DVD in their player but may be able to in a friends player or PC. This is not uncommom and may be a pain in the back end of many DVD owners for a long time.

Most of our customers believe it is the players because a certain disc will not play on their player but on another with no problem. These people have really downed our product on the net. Basically until all people are educated on the real issue..many companies like ours will be in hot water with our customers.

Hope this helps.
