Cheapskate Speaker + Amp

drunkstudent (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 12th March 2001, 12:52

Hi Guys

After all the advice I have shelled out my notes for the LG3350e from DABS I`ve been waiting since 10th of Jan but I need the cheapest price.

I`m now looking to buy an amp as I`ve decided to buy the eltax moviemaxx speakers from richer sounds (anybody know how good they are?) . As much as I`d like to buy a Yamaha DSP-A5 I can`t afford one can anybody recommend a decent budget amp. I`ve been looking at the Sony str-de 445 but I dont know what it`s like and at £170 it`s right at the top of my price range. Any ideas?

Thanks

Drunkstudent

What features do you want from the amp?

Surround?
Pro-logic surround?
Digital sound processing (DSP)?
5.1 Surround?
DTS?

A couple people have said that the moviemaxx bundle is pretty s***e - but it all depends what you can afford. Have you checked out amp/speaker bundles like creative labs dtt 3500 and the teac powermax 2000. Theyre sort of meant for computers/budget home cinema.

both are available from jungle.com

Ideally I want the cheapest DTS system with a view to upgrading the speakers to match the amp later on. I`d rather not get a bundle as I think I might have problems upgrading later on. Is this wrong? Could I upgrade. I`ll take a look at the 3500 and the powermax. Thanks for replying guys.

Another quick thought. The videologic digitheatre LC gives me the package without the decoder but as the amps are built in to the speakers presumably I could get a DD system for about £110. Then I might be able to upgrade by getting a dts decoder in the future. Any Ideas on this as I`m not sure how the digithatre speakers are compared to the eltax moviemaxx.

I must say that I have heard the movimax bundle is limited in quality.
Have a good read through the thread below, this might supply a solution for you?

Thanks for all your help guys. I`ve just had a small bonus from work so I`ve bought the eltax hollywood speakers as I saw a good review of them and I`ve coupled it with a sony 445 should be OK I think

Thanks again
