Why r expensive dvd players not multi-regional?

CarryOnBecky (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 10th March 2001, 22:30

Why is it only budget players offer Multi regional? As i would love to buy a Sony or Toshiba but in my mags none of the more expensive players seem to have to multi regional function. Why is this?

Because the "Big brand" companieswholly support the regionalisation coding, and insert different firmware chips into the units destined for different countries.

The "budget" price players keep part of the costs down by making one "generic" player for more than one region, and hiding a "service code" in the firmware.
We refer to said service code as a "hack" once we find it.

Let`s see how many Sony owners now want to say that the whole extra cost of their player is for "quality" and not for cost covering for this undesirable practice.

(And watch ToyCar come in laughing again! lol)

also they tend to have ther fingers in the disc and or film production pie also, and want to get as much money out of you as they can.

dont get me wrong jimbo i dont have a problem with them 2 or 3 times the price for quality players and then replacing them when DVD RW comes around thats up to them. it when they claim there perfect and demand the whole world must think as they do and there perfect player will be perfect for the whole world. thank god (that not sony bear) that they dont have any real power, cause last time some one like this had any power a war kicked off.

I think Sony own Columbia Pictures - could be wrong but I think they do.

Also the film companies only agreed to put their films on dvd if the dvd manufactures agreed to make disks specific to `regions`.

if we didn`t have `regions` we wouldnt have many films available on dvd. I suspect it wont be long before regions is redundant - films will be released simultanuously world wide to counter act the growth of multi region players.

Bear, I`ve been in Electrical Retail for about 15 years now, and can tell you that Sony have a high fault/return rate.

The main problem with a faulty Sony unit, is that they make the simplest things so complicated, a repair generally fails shortly thereafter, and the problem re-occurs.

If you have multiple Sony products with no problems over an 8 year period, trust me, you`re one of the lucky ones!

I must also be very lucky.

What`s so special about dvd-rw. Record eastenders and play it back at the same quality it was transmitted, wow. Oh I know, record from another dvd player and have no menus to choose your special features from because youve recorded just the image and not the disc. Or maybe you think the quality is as good as a true manufactured disc that is`nt encoded in real time with error correction and motion compnsation to contend with. Do scan have a dvd recorder in the pipe line or will you have to bite the bullit and buy a big brand name like Sony.

I`m also in the trade and I can tell you that at the moment Tosh have serious problems with their high end crt`s but that`s nothing compared to the production problems Phillips are having. I could go on but It is ultimatley, "Pointless".

Could it be that there are more returns on Sony kit because more Sony kit is sold than smaller brands ... ?
