Page 1 of DVD-ROM and Region Free
Hardware Forum
Hope this is the correct forum. I have a DVD-Rom, a toshiba SD-M1212. Basically using DVD Genie(ver 4.10) its region free. However when I was using Win98 each time I switched region using DVD Genie this had no bearing on the 5 changes you are allowed with the drive, the 5 changes remained at 5. Upon upgrading to WinXP each time I changed region the box poped up asking me to select a region and decreasing the changes by 1. This drive is now at region 2 with no changes remaining although I can still play all regions using DVD Genie.
I have just got a DVD RW(Plextor 708A- RPC11). This has the 5 changes intact. Is there any way I can change regions without the effect of decreasing the 5 changes each time I change region.
One other thing, with the Toshiba drivv(Region free-RPC1), does anyone know why after my upgrade to XP when using DVD Genie the 5 changes started decreasing each time I changed region with DVDG, this used not happen in Win98. Is this something specific to WinXP.
There is a cheap program that runs in the background of ANY dvd-rom which fools it into thinking all discs are region 2. You can copy discs with it too.

Let me know what you think.
Seeing as you`ve multiregioned your Toshiba drive, you should be able to do the same for the Plextor which also has RPC-1 firmware available.
Don`t worry about the counter and DVDGenie, XP is the problem. You could check for an updated version to be on the safe side.
