Scart vs S-video?? Using Panasonic E50

vitascope1 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 11th February 2004, 18:51

Hi
I have a Panasonic E50 DVD Recorder.

I use a smart 2000 Player for back ups, which connects from s-video to a scart to my recorder.
would it make any difference if I connect s-video to s-video or is s-video to scart better???.

It would be quicker to connect via the front of the recorder than the back!!!

cheers

It doesn`t matter. You`re dealing with the same signals, the only difference is the plug type.

So, feel free to use the S-Video and audio connectors on the front if it`s more convenient.

Do you need to spend load`s of money on gold connection leads etc.

Do they make any difference?

I think the reason that some leads have gold plated connectors is to prevent corrosion over the long term. How long that is I don`t know. AFAIK there is a small advantage with gold connectors for the ordinary person in the street, but I reckon you could always take the "middle ground" and buy a well made lead from a reputable manufacturer, making sure that each of the 21 or so wires is individually shielded. Also it`s a good idea to keep the cable runs as short as possible. Of course that means having to go to a specialist who will tailor make up leads for you. A lot depends on the sort of equipment you are connecting together, if it`s very high end stuff then get the best lead you can afford. Just my opinions of course.

Gold doesn`t oxidise. Aluminium covers itself with a thin layer of oxide and this is not conductive. Steel is the same, and iron oxide is well known as rust. You can see it when it gets very thick.
Therefore gold is best, but the socket on the player is unlikely to be gold plated unless it`s an expensive one, so you won`t get perfection.
I WOULD use gold plated leads though.
