Please advise! About to buy my first player...!

Mr. Pogo (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 23rd February 2001, 23:09

OK, my only real options are budget DVD players. Right now my choices seem to be:
1. Philips DVD710 (129.99)
2. Alba DVD103 (149.99)
3. Samsung 511 (159.99)
4. Matsui 120 (149.99)
5. Matsui 122 (128.90)
6. Pioneer 530 (179.25)
plus the LG, Minato ,etc from Tesco

I`m looking for multi-region and am told that only the manual hack players will stop the current RCE. The muppet in the shop tells me the Alba will do this but I`ve read otherwise on this forum...I need NTSC R1 compatability to play discs from the US & Japan, plus R2s, natch.
MP3 compatability would be great, but I can do without.
I`d be hugely grateful to anyone who can help me out here, bearing in mind I`m a DVD virgin on a budget! Cheers people.

Answer to this one is very simple.
The LG, but try to test the hack in the store before you buy, or look for a way to return it if it doesn`t work.

There`s a switch on the back of the player that if you set it to "PAL" then it`ll output PAL from any disc you put in, yes, even R1 NTSC discs.

However, if you can hold off until they are available, I would suggest waiting for an Aiwa 370 or an LG 3350 as this gives the added benefits of CDR/CDRW read, VCD playback and MP3 decoding.

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!

I have the LG 3200e. £127 from Big W superstore.
Hackable from the box. I have the region set to zero and it plays Hollow man region one from the tin no problem. this of course is a disk affected by the RCE curse of hollywood !
The picture is top notch on a 32" widescreen. It is RGB compliant and to be fair as a casual DVD`er i.e - friday , saturday night etc it works well for me.
I have an ethos on DVD.

Buy cheaper now, when DVD re writeable hits the shores at a decent price splash the cash and dump the video.
Well, thats the plan.

Pete.

"how`s thing`s have you got the shrine un and running?"

No! I had a little scare with the MiCO a week ago.
The audio was cracking and clicking all over the place.

This has put my MiCO Shrine, now to be called "MiCO DVD Consortium",
back even further!

Not to worry though, found out the problem was due to the TV. Phew!
Static build-up or something equally strange on the SCART inputs!

"also I here Yelo have got there act together like scan"

The fact that it`s still called Yelo 800 leads me to think they havent changed it that much. Its old now anyway.

"erm okay I will shut up."

That`ll be the day :-)

"but before I do.......You could try the Hitachi 505 for 230 from Dicko`s"

New it was too good to last! So that`s buy sh*t from a sh*t wholesalers. Make sense to me.

"Hey carrot the last load of dvd`s I have had-> JFK:SE, SNATCH, LIVE AND LET DIE have shown no artifacts!"

Pity all the rest you havent mentioned DO! Ha-Ha.

"I have not changed my firmware.........so I have not got a clue why"

Must be down to the poor picture on your TV! Who makes it btw?
