Need advice on new TV aerial

Faramir (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 9th January 2004, 20:29

I have recently purchased a digital TV and I am thinking of getting a new TV aerial to improve the reception. Can anyone give me some advice on what I should be looking for. How much should I be spending on a new aerial?
I already have a good analogue signal but I have been told that the digital reception can be improved with an aerial upgrade.

Thanks :)

Have you tried a signal amplifier yet. If you can borrow one, or go to Argos and change it in 16 days, see what happens to the signal strength. It should be stronger but look how it fluctuates. Too much is bad even if it makes the signal stronger. I tried this method for my parents. Also, some amplifiers have variable gain controls so the signal does not get too strong.
Incidentally One for All indoor aerials are £7.49 in Dixons. If you are not in a bad area, they could be just as good.

Get the best High Gain one you can afford, don`t rely on amps, you can`t put back what you haven`t captured in the first place. Too many times people have bought a good tv and expect it to show a good picture with a poor aerial it`s not just a bit of metal stuck on the roof to be forgotten about, look after it and it will look after you.

I want to set up Freeview, just got a box, but i think need to aim aerial as no picture on analogue (have not used aerial for over 5 years).

Do I just get out an A to Z and aim it in the general direction of Crystal Palace ( I live in Berkshire), or is there a scientific way of pointing the aerial. I don`t want to spend hours on the roof!!! not in this weather! :o
