problems with dts

boogie (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 30th November 2003, 13:35

i have a home cinema set up consisting of a matsui dvd120 and a marantz sr4200 reciever. both have dts capabilities, and they are connected with a optical cable, yet when i set the amp to dts mode i get no sound. and yes i am using dts compatible discs (queen greatest hits, lotr ee etc). i cant think what im doing wrong. it is especially annoying with the queen dvd as that only has dts and no dolby digital, so i can only listen to it in stereo.

any help will be appreciated.

Have you got 5 speakers and a sub-woofer?

I had this problem many moons ago before I owned a subwoofer...just `pretending` I had one in the setup and redirecting bass through the front speakers wasn`t sufficient for the DTS soundtrack

At least I THINK that`s why it was - Just a thought. Anyway, problem went when I got a subwoofer.

Julian, your explanation is concerning bass output and re-direction and wouldn`t cause a problem in most set ups, you`d still get dts sound but with the bass re-directed to your front speakers.

Boogie, delve into the set up menu on the Marantz and ensure that you`ve got the digital input assigned correctly, (usually DIG4). Now, set up the speakers normally as per your speaker sizes. The important thing to remember is that you MUST leave the amp in `auto` sound mode for it to select the correct track from the dvd.

As a few side notes, have you ensured that the Matsui`s dts output is on? And here`s the one that`s going to make you sound thick, (but isn`t meant to!), but are you making sure that you`re selecting the dts track on the actual dvd itself? Go into the sound options on your dvd, (eg LOTR EE), and make sure dts is selected, then play the movieĀ¦! Your amp should then detect the dts sound! I mention this because you say that you`re selecting dts on the AMP and not necessarily mentioning anything about the dvd itself. The dts selection on the amp is for dvd`s and some dts cd`s that are not flagged, (eg ones that trigger the dts mode on the amp), so you have to manually select it.

Hope this answers your question

Have you checked your dvd setup - most of them have a DTS option in the audio menu and is probably switched off as default.

well it appears i was being an idiot. i honestly thought i had changed the sound setttings, but obviously not >:( .

only a seperate note now, is it better to use dts than dolby digital if i only have 5 speakers, because it generally is for 6.1, if im not mistaken? will i be losing out with this, as i know that the marantz doesnt support 6.1

thanks for your help guys

I assume you have 6 speakers including a sub.
The `is it better to use DTS or DD` doesn`t relate to how many speakers you have - they`re both 5.1.
A lot of people seem to prefer DTS (`cos they`re told it`s better) and it`s been discussed on these forums at great length.
There are variations like DTS EX that are 6.1 but if you`ve only got a 5.1 setup then the DTS/DD choice is a purely personal one....

Nice to see someone in the Westy camp on that one.

Sj has summed it up really, all i can add is that 6.1 isn`t really Quote:
that
important if you haven`t got a big room - there needs to be plenty of space behind you for the effect to work at its best.

And as Steve rightlypoints out, you`re only 5.1 so your ears are the perfect judge of whether the DTS marketing drivel is actually true or not ;)

Top amp by the way, and gald we can all be of service!! :D

it is a great amp. ive had it for almost a year, but only recently been using it for dvds. all the help has been much appreciated, but ive still got questions :/

my setup dosesnt yet contain a sub, so is only the five surround speakers. i thought that the `6` was a rear centre anyway? does this eman if i choose a 6.1 setup up on a disc (i.e LOTR) it will be sending signals to a sixth speaker which isnt there, therefore leaving me losing sound. Or does it know that the speaker isnt ther, so just send dts signal to five speakers?

once again thanks for help and speedy responses

The 6th speaker is the rear centre. If you don`t have one,the sound is shared between the other rear speakers.DTS-ES is true 6.1 sound with all speakers fed an independent output, while DD-EX creates a rear centre track from the other rears
