Reliability of 2nd Generation Phillips Recorders

The 880 and 890 first generation series from Phillips has taken a lot of flak in these forums over reliability. What`s the score with the next generation RV70 and RV80?

Well so far there appears to be not many dead machines. In about 6 months we can say so for sure

This is prercisely what these forums are for. Very interested in the experience of what actual owners of 70 and 80 machines have been. So far I`ve gone the -R route and very happy with the results but I have a lingering suspicion that +R is actually superior. Thus I would love to think that Phillips had sorted themselves out.

Which bit is superior?........the quality of picture of recorded playback?

Surely we`re not talking about the compatability issue of DVD players(again)?

Snafu-let those suspicions linger no longer.I had a Philips for over a year and have had a Panasonic for a few months now so I feel I can compare. The only reason you may ever want to risk buying into the Philips format is if you ever want your rewritable discs to play on other players. If thats not a requirement-stay put with DVD-R

on that note, i am thinking of getting a +rw machine for that very reason and looked at the mico but as it`s so damned ugly (sorry i know that may upset some) i decided against it, so my question is, which +r/rw machine would you recomend thats as near to the mico in price as poss. it should also be mentioned that whilst at the manchester computer fair the guy that runs p&b said they were hoping to get a multi format descktop machine (+r/rw/-r/rw) before xmas and that it would be cheaper than the mico !!! tho imho i`ll believe it when i see it :D

thanks in advance

Have a look in Dixons.

They sell a Grundig DVDRW recorder for £199.

Has anyone successfully managed to get Philips to swap their old 880/890 for a newer model?

I saw that yesterday and it comes with 10 discs (not sure what ones though). Anybody here got one of these models, I`d like some feedback on how they perform. I have recently got a Phillips DVDR70 but can return it up to the end of January so am keen for an idea of any models currently available for around the same price.
