28" Widescreen TV: Sanyo, Philips or Toshiba?

chewie (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 16th November 2003, 16:54

My brother is buying a 28" Widescreen TV, and is wondering out of these 3 which is the best:

Toshiba 28W37B

Sanyo 28FWN3

Philips 28PW6006C

The budget is strictly no more than £400. If you have any other recommendations they would be welcomed :)

I was in Comet on Thursday and bought a Toshiba 28Z33, including stand, looks smart, for £324. It`s a pureflat screen. TO be honest, considering the reports I have read of Phillips TVs going tits up, I would be wary of buying one. Sanyo, I have never had a Sanyo product so couldn`t comment on that.

Can`t wait til Tuesday til it`s avaialble for collection.

I hadn`t heard of Philips TV doing this. Was there a problem with Panasonic TVs?

I`ll have a look into the Toshiba 28Z33 as we have a huge Comet about 9 miles from us.

Cheers :)

Philips products are not as reliable as others. If the 3 all come inside your budget, then there is no contest-Toshiba it is.Sanyo are a budget make, and if you can afford a non budget make ,go for it

Not the one at Teesside Park is it? The new one that opened there about 12 months ago is absolutely massive, it`s like HUGE!

Thanks for the info all :)

It doesn`t look like it will be the Philips. I`ll get him to have a look at the Toshiba instore. It`s well within the price range, and our parents have a Toshiba 32" Widescreen which is ace, even if it is a bit older. :)

No, the one at the Maybury, Edinburgh ;)

JVC

I have a JVC widescreen and it is ace and it was the make I recommended to him, but obviously we`ll have to see in the shop.

Cheers :)

I`ve been looking like mad myself after my 3 year old toshiba went belly up, so here are the fruits of my enquiries - hope it helps.

I`d agree that the JVC TVs are very good for the money and usually come with 3 scarts (2 of which are RGB) - great connectivity. Samsung are good for price/quality.

I`d try both john lewis and allders (the shops as the web pages lag behind on price cuts and don`t show the finance deals).

John Lewis are doing free 5 yr parts and labour warranty and some prices are as cheap as the cheapest internet prices (but not all).

Allders are doing the same but with 6 or 12 months interest free. For example: a Hitachi totally flat 32" for £549 - free 5yr warranty and 6 months int free credit! etc etc.

John Lewis also has a "Never knowingly undersold" pricing policy, as well as excellent customer service. I believe there pricing policy only applies to high street prices though, not online.
