DVDR880- usual problems - HELP!

Gavpav (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 7th November 2003, 15:31

Hi,
well my dvdr880 started playin up a couple of months ago, i just finally got round to investigating what it could be, and have found that there are tons of people with the same problems.

Mine are, always saying `No disk` when there clearly is a working disk, always freezing especially on the layer change, and the occasional opening/closing of the tray on it`s own (complete with `error` on the screen).

I checked out my firmware and it appears to be version 10, does upgrading the firmware solve any of these problems?

I read elsewhere it was a problem with the lasers, if that is the case i guess i am done for as this machine is a few months out of warenty...

Has anyone else had these problems/ gotten them fixed? if so was it expensive or did phillips pay up?

Thanks for your help, sorry for so many questions

Gav

There was a batch of 890/880`s that had the wrong glue and with time broke down. Try contacting your retailer or Philips and let them know your problems.

All the best,

Out of warranty - out of luck, sorry. If your machine has firmware starting 10 (the current version is FF12t - on the line that starts BASE_SYS to double check), then it`s an early batch so the laser problem is more likely. You could give the firmware upgrade a go, but I doubt if it`ll cure things. Sorry. :(

I`d definitely take it back to the shop. It`s not exactly my area of expertise, but the goods the retailer sells have to be of merchantable quality, and that surely means they will last more than a year.
Bit of a long shot, but after all this is a known manufacturing defect, not a one off problem.
If no luck with the retailer, I`d try Philips. They might be prepared to deal with it on a goodwill basis. They must be geared up to dealing with these problems.
Mine went back to Philips via Richer Sounds, whose service, I have always found, is excellent. Once it was serviced, it`s been fine since. I suspect they may have put a new laser in it, but they don`t bother to tell you.

I have just had an 880 repaired free of charge that was 2 months out of warranty.I think if its a usual problem Philips will do it for free.A firmware update disc from Philips solved nothing and it still had to go back.I would move fast-you may find that contacting Philips directly on their website will be a better start as your retailer will possibly say that 4 months out is too long

Mine now plays up to,keeps saying no disk, have to load 2 or 3 times before it works.
Will also jump chapters or stall and picture break up.The real bad news is this my 4th one in just over a year, bet you can all guess what the wife says.

This is the usual way of things on an 880.Depending on when you bought it,maybe try to swap for another more recent model, otherwise yours will have to wait in the queue with all the others
