Home hifi

When it comes to hifi I only know the basics I basically am looking for a crisp sounding system and was wondering if I should go with a mirco hifi setup or a hifi seperates which would cost more.

Now my main uses would be only radio and cd only

now with a seperate system not sure if I got this right you have the cd player, the radio, the amp and the speakers? is that everything I need or have I missed something.

As with a micro unit you plub it in and all is done for you which would be simpler and cheaper but would I be losin out from superior sound. Not looking to opening a night club in my home I have quite a small living room also.

so I would be grateful if anyone has any recomendations for a hifi newbie on how to spend some money wisely

cheers

What sort of budget are you talking about?

I`d personally go for separates, but it all depends on budget etc.

We have this micro system in our bedroom, and it sounds superb!

If you`re after CD and radio only, what about the Denon M31? You can get it without speakers or with - the speakers are meant to be pretty good as well. You can always add minidisc or cassette later if you wish. Saw that Unbeatable are doing the base unit for under £200, and speakers are around £60. The predecessor, the M30, won many awards for sound quality. Some decent speaker cable and maybe some stands for the speakers, and you`ll have a lovely little system.

Oops - just clicked on sput`s link - look what he recommended! M31... QED`s price for the thing with speakers is better than Unbeatables.....

evening fellas

appreciate the replies. My budget is quite flexible but I don`t want to go overboard I would say £500 tops on a budget.

That looks like a nice little system I also saw this one TECHNICS SCHHD350 MICRO

fair price nice looking system but I haven`t been able to find a review on it.

What do you guys think?

or do you reckon the one sput2001 recomended with perhaps some good speakers?

If you fancy going further up your budget, try this cd player, this amplifier, these speakers and this tuner plus £50 on a couple of interconnects and speaker cable. Obviously the advantage with separates is that you can chop and change to suit your needs & budget.

Otherwise, I`d stick with the Denon. You could go for the "without speakers" option and get the Mission speakers as above, but the speakers that Denon supply (which are made by Mission anyway, I think) are pretty damn good. The cable supplied with them is pretty decent too.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for that sput been looking at the setup looks pretty good and price isn`t too bad I think thats the way to go.

The denon is a good setup aswell but having just spent a while reading up on seperates its a beautyful thing :) being able to mix and match. Those mission speakers look the business.

update: having said that the times now 11.40pm ish I could see myself buying a seperate system and not even using half its power and would be a total waste of money which my good lady acuses me of doing all the time. So I think i`ll spend the money on that smart looking capable denon without the speakers and get the missions and some nice speaker stands and I actually think i`ll be more than satisfied. My main use was just for cd and radio nd that does it and with those speakers it will deliver a good sound so I reckon i`ll go for that.

Owe you guys a pint been battling in my head which to go for ... cheers

Glad to have been of help! :)

If you`re not going with the Denon speakers you`ll need some speaker cable. It`s worth going for something semi-decent like this.

quick update: went to richer sounds they had the denon there with the SC-M51speakers that it comes with and those mission m71i`s the man in richer was very helpful I asked to try them both out and to be honest the ones it comes with are pretty good as you said theres not much in the price difference between the 2 just felt the missions had the edge and I liked the appearance more (not the best of reasons to pick them). The sound was that bit crisper to my ears bass was good.

so I picked up the missions and the hi-fi cable that you recommended (cheers)... the man in the store said its quite a decent system for a small living room and theres not much need to waste wad of dosh as he put it on a sep system if its not going to be used to the maximum.

apologies for the longish post

I love a happy ending
