Rear projection tvs - any good?

Cajm (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 2nd September 2003, 13:42

I am thinking of buy a rear projection tv. Either the SAMSUNG SP42W5HFX or SONY
KP44PX2U. I want a big picture but can`t afford a plasma.

Are they any good? :/

At the moment i watch all my DVDs via a IXOS Gold S-VHS connection lead. If i use the same lead on a RP tv will the picture still be as good?

They are not bad, but a word of warning they can suffer screen burn, my wifes parents have a samsung one and love sky, but sky logos dont love their screen you can see the image in the background of their favourite shopping channel on it all the time, Unfortunately there is not a remedy for this the manufactures are aware of this but dont cover this in the warranty as its a know problem. Picture and sound are good but i do find the picture a bit blocky if close up however they are designed not to be watched close up, The best thing to do is take your player and leads and do a test in the shop. Overall its alright but the screen burn issue is a major factor in my opinion especially with that kind of money. Maybe the sonys different give them a call but i think its a across the board.

Thanks for that.

Since reading your reply I managed to speak to someone at Sony and they reckon screen burn used to be a problem, more so on plasma screens, but they reckon they have over come it now.......probably sales speak, but something to think about.

Screen burn ....yup tis a problem. I have a thomson scenium 44" and stay clear of sky and ps2 being conected. The picture on the thomson is superb. I like the look of plasma screens but I dont think the picture is that much better than mine to justify an extra 2 grand or so spend. Go for at least a 44". I like thomson but heh the Sony is an excellent set ;)

Cheers ;)

I have been told the problem is caused by the channel logos on sky as they do not move. To help avoid this they reckon you should choose a different ratio and so move the logo off the screen. This may make you lose some of the picture but at least it saves your set.

Surly sky can give an option to remove the logo if they wanted to, or option to move it to different part of the screen periodically.
I have a 32" CRT panny. Until life of the projectors/plama become realistic to the price you pay, then CRT is the way for me.

Na but that is just too simple an answer for sky!!

I don`t see what benefit the logo has for sky?! We know what channel it is as we selected it in the first place! >:(

I know where you are coming from. I have a 28" CRT but want a bigger set. I was thinking about a 36" but the cost compared to a RP Tv isn`t worth the extra cost in my book.

hi
i`m lookin at getting a new tv, but like u am unsure whether i should get a 36" crt or 42" rear proj set.
is it true that u have to have a straight line of sight [180 degrees perpendicular] to a proj set. ie. u can`t view it properly from the side or at an angle, as the picture diffuses or is out of focus???
how much is a decent picture quality 36 incher??
50hz is better than 100hz isn`t it?

so many q`s - and we all want answers!!
which 36 inch set were u looking at?

thanks

I have a 42" Panny TX42PT10 & I think its great. Yes it has 180` viewing but only from sitting position !! The TV is both 50Hz & 100Hz (Choice to turn off 1Hz mode) & I prefer 100Hz. It also has inbuilt Progressive Scan for NTSC discs which is quite nice. I bought my TV from empiredirect.co.uk 2 years ago & when I did, I paid extra for a 5 year warranty, about 6 months ago I had CEBEEBIES burnt into the screen (Bloody kids) so I phoned the insurance agent @ 9am on a Monday morning & the picked it up at 11am & fixed it under warranty with no questions asked :0)

So my advice is - PAY EXTRA & GET EXTENDED WARRANTY otherwise, buy with confidence

Note: I must say, no point going to shop really as when you see it at the shop, you say 5 feet away, when if your like me, realistacally my TV is 15 foot away so the picture is superb
