Macrovision disabler will work on region 2, but not on 1???

lievn (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 21st January 2001, 00:19

A friend of mine has a box to "improve the picture" of his DVD, so macrovision won`t bother him when trying to copy to his VCR.

But now he`s tried to do the same with a region 1 DVD, but the picture`s screwed when played afterwards.

Any ideas?

The player is a Philips (will ask for more info about it).

Thanks....

The problem is that Region 1 disks are americain - they use a different TV system to us which is not compatable with our VCR`s over here unless it is a specific type - basical if he didn`t spend at least £500 on it then there`s no chance it is one !

To record Region 1 DVD to video you`d also need to convert the video into PAL format - and remove the macrovision.

Not quite accurate old boy, there are players in the £250 area that will do NTSC record/playback on compatible PAL tv`s.

Or have a player that converts to PAL for you...erm..like..an....AIWA 370!!

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies!

I`ve got some extra info.
His VCR should play and record NTSC tapes (according to the manual).
He told me that he can watch the movie in color on his TV and on the VCR channel.
The "problem disc" is Scary Movie
The DVD player is a Philips 701.

So the macrovision should be disabled by his "enhancer" box (it works on his region 2 discs).
And the NTSC problem should be solved because his VCR can play AND record NTSC. (unless he didn`t read his manual correct of course)
Or does the Philips player have to have the NTSC to PAL conversion still (like the Aiwa??).

By the way, his problem does sound like macrovision (weird picture, good sound).

As u see I`m not really sure on the matter... :-/

"His VCR should play and record NTSC tapes (according to the manual)."

I don`t think so! You will find a UK VCR will play an NTSC tape but you CANNOT RECORD it.

There are exceptions but the VCR`s cost over £600 or there is a Ferguson VCR that will record a pure NTSC signal.

My Mico DVD player will allow recording of a Region 1 NTSC disc because it is first converted to Pal and macrovision disabled.

I have a similar problem, my dvd (pioneer 535, macrovision disabled), converts the NTSC to PAL 60. I can watch any region 1 dvd ok, even through the video channel. Yet on playback the picture is jumping around. My video will record PAL, but playback on NTSC.

Shouldn`t this be okay, as the DVD output is PAL? any help would be appreciated.

Region 2 DVD are spot on.

John,

the problem is that your player converts the NTSC signal to PAL 60, but your VCR can only record in PAL 50.
So you would need a NTSC to PAL converter to solve the problem.

Hi there

Just wanted to advise that an NTSC recording VCR is available for much less money.

Thomson model 6950U is one that I know of selling for £99 plus VAT in Makro (it actually states this on the facia front) although I believe available slightly cheaper on the web with some etailers. I understand that most of Thomson (there is a connection between this company and Ferguson) VCR`s can record in NTSC.
