...have a look at one of the new DVD mags that has just reviewed the 505. Basically it said that unless you play it on a 4 inch screen the quality is s***e!
I must admit, after all of your `rockin` about the 505 I do view this `pants` review with some sceptism!

I have a Hitachi 523 28" widescreen:P And most of the time the picture is good, but sometimes the artifacts raise their head.
The quality of the 4408 picture is slightly better then the 4318F but if you take into account that 505`s where selling for 300 a month ago.
The picture dropouts dont justify the 300 even though they are minimal.
I am currently in contact with a programmer who says the ESS chipsets where built on mpeg 1 technology, and simply altered for mpeg 2 which has caused problems and that the firmwware can be programmed to out put a far better picture.
But I have mentioned this before Funboy!
also what mag was it?
If it is DVD Review or DVD Buyer (same mag) we have covered that.

Are you saying that by a firmware upgrade (i.e. by CD), the ESS chipset can be made fab, or is that just wishful thinking ?

Not sure - but it just hit our newsagent today - defo Feb issue.
It was the review that said "don`t touch the 505 with a bargepole!" and gave picture quality 48% which has to be the s***tiest mark I`ve seen.

It is no worse then the encore, scan etc the reason it is getting s*** on is it costs a lot more and is by a major brand.
All ESS player`s have the Hitachi problem including scan encore etc..

Clayts it is known that one of the filters inside the ESS chipset is not used!
Why we dont know but it is used on zoran players.
Some very talented guy`s are looking into it.

Hitachi are a second rank company and their behavior over the 505 problem merely confirms this. Dump them and either go premium with Sony or Panasonic accepting that 3rd party mods are a price to pay or take a risk with rising stars such as LG with the 3350 or its close relation the Aiwa 370. Incidentially I understand that Aiwa is owned by Sony.
