I have had a matsui 32" Widescreen for nearly 18 months now which I bought ex demo. I have had no problems at all. It doesn`t have all the bells and whistles but I only use it as a screen as my home theater amp does all the sound duties. My investigations came to the same conclusion as micky that it is indeed a grudig set. I have also seen some information to suggest that Matsui are actually made by multiple manufacturers. It just depends who Dixons get the best deals from. It is currently Grundig but apparently it has been Sanyo in the past.

Don`t worry about the brand. Worry about the picture. I can`t remember where I saw the post but I got some great advice about ideal contrast / brighness levels. I think it was what hi fi. Basically have brightness at about 33%, Contrast at about 66% and then play the end credits of a widescreen film. The black should be as close to the letterbox black at the top and bottom and the whites should be bright but not `fizz`. By fizzing I mean bleed into the black like you have your eyes squinting. If this is not so then adjust the contrast and brightness to taste. Then play a DVD with really bright reds (total recall, apocalypse now etc) Adjust the colour until you get really deep, believable reds and skintones again without `fizzing`.

Once I`d followed this the picture was marvellous. For years I had the contrast down, the colour middling and the brightness up resulting in pale washed out movies. NO MORE!!!! (Got a bit carried away there).

Good luck.

Surely adjustments as per the above won`t be possible if using an RGB signal ??

true providing you set your player to output RGB, but my first DVD player was not RGB compatable. Anyway the process is great for `calibrating` your TV as it applies to off air transmissions and recordings as well.

Readmenow is correct that Currys/Dixons source the Matsui range from different manufacturers. Some of the small portables are made by Philips. Rebadging is on the up now, most cheap VHS recorders made by the big companies(Sony, Panasonic etc) are in fact rebadges. Had a Sony deck in for repair recently and it turned out to be an Aiwa. I think the main thing with some of these Matsui and other shop own brands is they`re just not expected to last as long as the named product. As a repair engineer myself this doesn`t always turn out to be the case but sometimes you get lucky.

Thanks for all the replies guys, very, very helpful. I am still waiting for the set to be delivered, to replace my aging 28" nicam set. Thought the matsui was a very competitively priced set @ 379 inc. stand as apposed to 799 for a sony or even 549 for a grundig.

Plus, the main factor was the case colour. All my stuff is black and a bright silver set (such as the goodmans from comet) would have looked totally out of place.....

Once again, if you guys can let me know any tweaks or tricks for this set b4 mine arrives, that would be great.

hehehe, dont mess with firmware flashing on a 528 ;-)

Go for a 505 as ur replacement or a 402 which comes in black!
