Plasma, Rear projection or 36" Toshiba

dsm (Competent) posted this on Monday, 6th January 2003, 17:27

I`m about to upgrade my TV and would like an unbiased opinion of what to buy. Every salesman to date has quoted "bigger is better".

I`ve about £2500 to play with and want to know what you would recommend.....

A plasma - is £2500 enough for a decent one?

A Rear Projection - I`ve only seen these running in Currys/Dixons etc - you know the score - bad lighting, awful connections, bad choice of film (I could go on!).

or "settle" for a 36" picture frame Toshiba? I like these and wonder if it`s worth the extra cost for either of the above. What is the difference in quality when these pieces of kit are set up properly?

Thanks,

Dave

If I was going to spend £2500 I would find a shop that can display properly the models I was after and go for a look taking my own disk. No matter what anyone says on here it will be there own opinion and should only be used as a rough guide. Salesmen do not care what you want or need he`s only interested in his commision, go into any Richer Sounds and ask what the best DVD player is 99% of the time it will be Limit or whatever the best earner is that month. I only have a small living room so a 28 inch Toshiba flat screen jobby makes it look like a cinema and pleased I am with it. Sorry can`t help any more, good hunting.

Steve..

£2,500 is a bit skinny for a plasma, so you`re going to be looking at budget cheapo models. Projection is for dumb Americans who have no taste, but like to be able to get 4 picture-in-pictures of different college football games dotted around the edge of the screen.

The picture frame toshy is another story. A friend has one of these and it`s just awesome. Unless you have a particularly large living room the 36" toshy will give you a superb viewing experience.

Hi,
I have just purchased the Samsumg PS42 Plasma from Dixons for £3k, everything is included, desk top stand, speakers, speaker stands, tuner box with massive connection capabilities. The picture is great, maybe not the best of the plasma bunch, but when its two grand cheaper than its counterparts, you can easily live with it. It looks awesome in the room too. The Tosh 36" CRT is nice head on, but it is a very deep bulky unit. Best of luck.

I had been renting TVs for the past few years, swapping them 3 and 4 times a year for the next best one to come out. Philips was my favorite but i decided to pack in renting and buy one.

I choose the Toshiba 36ZT29, it has the best picture i have seen when fed a digital source....looks even better than some of the Plasmas i see in showrooms.

You get DD5.1
Progressive NTSC
Stylish cabinet that hides you equipment and looks really neat
3 scarts...1 RGB, 2 S/Video
1 Component Connection
Digital Terrestrial built in

The screen does,nt even collect dust (strange)

You can buy them for about £1500 online.

I`ve had the 36" Toshiba Picture frame TV for about 15 months now. It was & still is the best picture for the money (& I`m a Sony lover). BUT... I am going to upgrade to a 42" plasma shortly. I would go for the best Plasma you can afford. Even the cheaper plasmas with one of the free to air tuners should be in your bracket.

Paull,
Is it the Dolby Digital 5.1 one? If so, what do you think? Or do you go through separate amp?

Hi sj, It is Dolby Digital 5.1. In the past I`ve had separate A/V amps, but due to space & other Sky etc boxes we decided to give the onboard sound a try & it really is superb (even with the speakers provided). I won`t argue if people come on here & say separate is better, but my friend who stayed with us over the new year has separates was very impressed. It does not support DTS. Hope this helps.

Certainly does mate, thanks. Does it have a built-in sub? If so is it OK. I accept it won`t be as good as a separate one but can you tell it`s there!!??
