How do you know when you can get an update for your digibox?

Tim Elliott (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 5th January 2003, 22:26

I always get an update error message whenever I try.

Do you get a message or am I missing announcements somewhere?

I`m afraid I have a Bush so maybe that serves me right.

What message are you getting when trying to update the software ? Normally if you disconnect the lead from the back of the Digi box, press and hold the Back-up button and then re-connect the mains lead at the back of the Digibox the message should be displayed and read ,
Software Update In Progress
This may take ten to fifteen minutes
Do not disconnect from mains during this time.

After about five to ten minutes the system should go into standby. When you switch it back on with either the remote or the button on the Digibox it will be on the Sky Info channel 998?
If the update message is still on screen after 20+ minutes, unplug and after about 30 seconds plug it back in without holding the back up button. It should go straight to CH 998 ? and search for channel listings.
I updated our system a couple of days back (after a lock up) and the versions are as follows.
O/S 1.2S4Bq
EPG 3.1a.5
I can only guess that these are the latest versions. Apparently SKY do the automatic updating of software during the wee small hours so it might be better to leave it in their "Capable" Theres a joke :-) hands.

Ah! I should be more clear about my equipment. eh scratch that!

I actually meant the digbox for freeview, and I actually meant the
digbox inside my IDTV set. And as it`s a Bush I don`t think they
even bother to put updates out.

Whenever I have tried an update, the telly goes off, comes back on,
shows a blank screen with `auto update` comes up, and after about
20 to 30 seconds message then reads `update error`. Then it goes
back to the channel it was on previously.

There is a postbox function which was obviously meant to notify
users of updates but I have never had anything come through on that.

Looking at Choathy`s method of forcing an update with the sky digibox
maybe I could try a similar trick with my aerial signal lead!
