Question about Macrovision?

theslayer (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 12th November 2002, 18:14

Hi everyone

Could someone please tell me exacly what macrovision is? I am very confused. I was lead to believe that if Macrovision can be disabled, you can tape the dvd to a vhs. Could some please confirm this for me please or tell exacly what macrovision is?

Thanks in advance

Not sure about the technology used. Macrovision is a tool used to prevent you copying DVD to video. I`ve never had a player which has had it enabled so I can`t tell you the symptoms. I suspect it`s either no picture or a flashing picture like the old VHS security. As I understand it Macrovision affects the picture regardless of whether you are recording or not i.e. if you pass your scart from your DVD through your video then the picture interference will be seen.

I have macrovision disabled on both my players and though I`ve never needed to record a DVD to VHS I have tried it to satisfy my curiosity and it works.

No worries, glad I could help. I`ve got a multiregion Toshiba SD220e from Richersounds. It has macrovision disabled in its multiregion form.

It`s advertised in what hifi for £134.00. It`s a steal at that price but apparantly amazon.co.uk have it for £120. The tosh has won loads of awards and is widely regarded as a fine machine. It`s younger brother (SD120e) is also a fine player for around £100 in multiregion form. Both have all the connections you want and are of rock solid build. There are loads of others to recommend. Have a look around the forums, everyone has their favourite. Happy shopping!

Yeah, a couple of my mates at work have told me about that machine, they all recommend it highly. I just bought the one from Superdrug, and finally got the hack for it, now plays VCD`s, DVDR and MP3`s. It also has the option to turn off macro, tried taping a couple of dvd onto vhs for my sister worked great.

I suppose when I really know what i`m talking about and know exacly whats what, thats when i`ll look for a main dvd player..

Anyway cheers for the help
