Problems playing audio CDs and certain discs on Wharfedale 750S

Paulie B (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 1st September 2002, 01:08

DOn`t know if anyone else has encountered this but here it goes anyway: Been using the old trustworthy Wharfedale for about three years. Everything worked fine for the first two but in the last year, it won`t playing ANY audio CDs at all and certain DVDs - the ones I have that won`t work are:

Our Friends in the North bonus disc (R2)
O Brother Where Art Thou disc 2 (R2)
Down by the Mountain (R2)

As with the audio CDs, it refuses to recognise the disc - the machine whirs for a while then stops and acts like there is no disc in the machine.

Apart from that, the machine is fabulous - never had any R1 compatibility problems and no b/w or flickering. But I`m wondering if other things will start to go as the machine gets older.

Would appreciate anyone`s help on this. I have a friend who has the same problem on the Wharfedale 750.

Thanks

I had a similar problem with my Aiwa hi-fi as it would not play CD-R`s.

You could try a CD cleaner disc but if that does not work then the CD lense may need cleaning properly buy opening the box. If you don`t know what your doing get a professional to do it

Paulie,

I think your laser pick on your DVD 750s needs adjusting. Had a similar problem with a Minidisc deck. It could be a laser focusing problem.

Hi,

I came here searching for help as I have exactly the same problem
- Wharfedale 750S, works fine with DVDs, put in a CD and it
refuses to recognise the disc anymore. I was tearing my hair out as
I`d compiled a VCD of a sequence photograph stills and it try
as I might, I couldn`t get it to recognise the CD-R - eventually I thought to try an ordinary music CD and it rejects those with the "No Disc" message too, I`m sure it used to work with audio CDs when it was new. Anyone got any idea or the service centre contact number, I seem to have lost the manual
for this baby too.

TIA

Ed

I`m a little surprised at there being problems with CD but not DVD -- are there distinct laser units on the reader head? It certainly sounds worth trying a head cleaner as a first step.

After that, you`re rapidly getting to the point where replacement may cost less than repair. Since Richer Sounds were selling them earliet this year, they`ll probably know where, or whether, repairs might be made. The review elsewhere on DVDReviewer also points to Tesco.

The manufacturer is Wharfedale International (according to the manual for my DVD-750): there is a phone number given but I think you`d be better doing a web search, or even directory enquiries. I think they`ve moved in the last year or two.

Picked up this thread a bit late, but I have exactly the same problem. DVD`s run OK and Audio CD`s do not (there are also threads by others about problems with Warner Bros DVD`s etc).

I asked at my local Richer Sounds and they suggested that the laser was misaligned, and recommended a local service centre, but suggested that £30 to take the lid off and then what ever it cost to repair probably wasn`t worth the investment . . . and I tend to agree.

Other threads suggest taking the back off yourself and cleaning the transport mechanism with a damp cotton bud has resolved the problem in the past . . . but I never tried it so I can`t comment. I have a separate CD player now.

Classic symptoms of the laser saying good buy to the world, use it for DVD`s till it dies, could give lens a clean might help but I doubt it.

Clayts had an article on is website that showed you how to put a new drive in a player, don`t know if it can be done to the Wharfedale or wether is worth the cost or bother, I mean you can get a new player for £60 to £80.
