Wanted Budget: Multiregion DVD player that plays VCDs and MP3s too.

My Samsung M105 is getting on my nerves - it is really picky about which discs it plays. I watched Donnie Darko on it earlier this year with no probs, tried to watch it again last night and it kept freezing and jumping all over the place. Had similar problems with XMen, Shrek, Clerks TAS and a few others. Unfortunately warranty just ran out.

So, I plan to replace it as cheaply as possible, and I`d like a machine that could cope with VCDs and MP3s burnt with Nero, if possible.

Help.

Why not try a Daewoo 6000D from Bennets,or Safeway. These babys will play anything you throw at them.Haven`t had mine long, but the vcd`s i make with Nero play fine,as do svcd`s.Don`t be tempted by makes like Pacific,Medion etc,as most of these have been nobbled not to play vcd`s,and the build quality is highly suspect.

Have you tried cleaning you DVD lens?

My Eclipse started acting like that with certain discs and after I cleaned it, it was fine again.

Might be a bit of a cheaper option for you if you haven`t already tried it?

Scan 2500 plays all disc formats and also has dolby 5.1 sound output. Retails for around £116. This is going to be my next player as my samsung 709 is getting a little temperamental in its old age.

Mate, I got myself a Alba 108 last weekend and granted I`m new to DVD`s I think it was GREAT value at only £69.99!

It`s a multi region machine so there`s no funny `hacks` to do on it before you play those dodgy yanky DVD`s your mate got off the net last week!!

It apparently plays VCD`s too, I`m going to watch one tonight (granted with a little help from the remote control hack mentioned elsewhere on this site).

Looks cool too! Nice1

Cleaning the lens?

...could be the way forward. I`ll try it this weekend.

Hi, I have the samsung M105, and X-Men, region 2, and it plays fine for me.

As others have suggested, change the model, but clean the lens first

Cleaning the lens seems to have worked. I rented XMen last year when my M105 was fairly new; it played fine until I tried to watch the `branching` version, which jumped all over the place. Had to watch the extra scenes separately in the end.

Got the player free with a mobile phone deal - curiously enough, the phone (an Ericsson) was absolute pants too, although the tariff was pretty good.
