The HE review (see my thread re Home Entertainment`s latest champs) notes the 212 won`t playback CD-R or CD-RW (and thus by default MP3). It may be worth checking other threads on this forum about this tho`.

It is multi-region with a simple hack :

(1) Press the POWER button to turn the player on
(2) Press OPEN
(3) Tap in 7,6, SELECT on the remote
(4) Choose `13` multiregion
(5) Press SET UP on the remote
(6) Switch the POWER off
(7) Switch the POWER on - voila : multiregion!

The mag says the piccy is okay (for the price) as is the sound. Apparently there is no SCART socket, but again I`m sure that can be answered elsewhere on the site.

I bought one from Smiths the other day, I can honestly say it`s very good. It doesn`t have SCART so no RGB, but it does have composite out and S-Video. It has macrovision turned off as standard. It also converts NTSC to PAL50, so you can make VHS back-ups of US DVDs no problems. The picture is a bit `soft`, but is OK. The sound is good too, with no noticable background hiss from the analogue audio out. It has 2 headphone sockets with a volume control, and again there is no hiss at all from these, but the output is very `tinny`. It also has optical and co-axial digital out. The drive mechanism is a lot quieter than I expected, with only a bit of noise during loading the disk or changing title/moving around the disc. I have tried a number of R1 and R2 discs and had no problems.

Smiths told me they are selling upwards of 10 a day in just my local store, so somebody somewhere knows they`re on a good deal! Get one from Smiths on one of the 10% off everything nights. Check your local store for dates. You`ll also get about 2.5quids worth of Club Card points!

It is a good buy! It can be set to any region or region free. It does not have a SCART but can be connected via an adapter that comes in the Smiths Box. It also comes with SVideo out.

I have had mine for a couple of weeks now and am impressed.

BTW the WH Smith home page says that it does support CD-R and CD-RW. I would include the URL but it seems to be knackered at the moment :-(

Dean, I wished I had seen your review sooner. I was interested in this player but I could not get the sort of technical detail you have given. I even called the Cyber home helpline phone number given out by W.H.Smiths, but they were very vague. My requirements were PAL50 output and switchable multi region, the only player that I could find that fitted the bill was the LG3200E purchased from Techronic. It appears that the Cyber home would have been perfect but at almost half the price....damm.

it all sounds great for the price.

couple of questions though:-

can it connect to a hi-fi amplifier if it is connected to the tv?
and
does it have DTS?

I`ve got mine attached to a 5.1 amp, and the sound is great. This model does not have DTS. Also I too get the problem with subtitles sometimes being on for certain titles, Gladiator R2 and X-men being the latest two I tried. I`ll have to make a note to see which titles are affected to see if there is a pattern.
