That sounds like a good deal... but it`s worth mentioning that all Philips players are multi-region out-of-the-box courtesy of the handset hack detailed on this site. I have the DVDR980 and I was seriously chuffed when the given codes worked first time (I was getting ready to send it away for chipping!). I assume that the hack works with the 880 too as it`s basically just the next version of the same machine.

Sorry Weezer if that`s old news to you (or anyone else), but there may be people who end up paying more for a `multi-region` machine simply because they`re unaware of the hack...

Just use the standard Philips 750 hack. Used it on my recorder this evening and works fine

Mike- If you look in the `Multi-Region Hacks` section of this site (underneath INFO on the left), you`ll find instructions on how to make Philips players region free. Note: You`ll need a One-for-All 6 or similar device in order to send the required IR signal.

Jarvis- Hmm, not sure what to recommend. All I know is, I followed the procedure exactly as directed (using the alternative code which is specifically for the recordable decks) and my 980 DOES spin RCE discs. I tried Hollow Man R1 after hacking the machine and it loaded straight away, plus I just got Resident Evil this morning and that played without a hitch too... Maybe some 980`s have different firmware?.

Letsbuyit.com have it for £399. Is it a new player, ie not an old one that people are sellng cheap ? Is it a first gen model ?

Nick.

It is being advertised as available for £349.99 + VAT (£411.25) at Makro the cash and carry people but you will need to be a registered card holder to buy from them.

The Makro offer doesn`t start until Wednesday 7th August, and guess what? my local Makro doesn`t have the DVD-R discs! Bloody typical. I would suggest giving your local store a call before you go.

Does the DVDR880 record to DVD-R as well as DVD-RW?, as the places I`ve seen it for sale only give recording time for DVD-RW.
