A cold Start is basically a way resetting your kit back to the settings it came with when it was shipped from the factory(this is sometime called a Hard reset or factory default reset). Its usually achieved by pressing two keys at the same time - the PLAY & STOP keys on the 709 perform this action. You`ll need to hold the keys down untill you get a `select menu language` message. Make sure you have no disk in the drive and perform the cold start immediately after turning on your player from standby mode.
As for Macrovision, I think the 511 cannot be disabled or chipped (modified internally with a IC chip) so you`ll need to get an external box (try maplins etc) to copy(oops! I mean Backup) DVDs.:-)

Surely there must be a secret menu or something to disable macro. Looked at a few places for external boxes, cheapest was about 60 quid, not that desperate.
What is the best way to hook up to your video?

I don`t know of any service menu for the 511. 709 owners have been looking for this elusive menu for months and come up with diddly-squat!.
I do know that some US 511 owners swapped their firmware for another model`s and managed to overcome macrovision, but I can`t remember the details and it sounded very dodgy. I`ve also read about linking the dvd player to the VCR via scart then connecting VCR to TV via composite lead (i.e. the coax aerial connection). Sounds loopy to me but can`t hurt to try....

I have fond a site that sells a device that disables macrovision but was trying to see if anyone had any experience with the Mac Master.

Tried this, didn`t work.
tried it to and still the flashing blus screen
Of course it will not work... Macro is built-in in MPEG processor in 511 and cannot be removed by handset hacks or chipping. You need external macro remover.
On Samsung 511 macrovision gets disabled when it is made multiregion. This only works for the very first models that came out in january. If you have just recently purchased one then Samsung have upgraded the firmware in the past few months and now macrovision is not disabled. For the new models a firmware upgrade is available on the internet, which you have to burn onto a cd and run it on the player. I will soon post the website address where the firmware upgrade can be obtained from.
