Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE):

garymartincook (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 27th February 2003, 19:27

Can anyone explain this?

Please Note: Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE): has been added by Warner and Columbia to certain Region 1 DVD's. RCE will prevent the DVD from playing on some "Multi-Region" DVD players. If you are in any doubt that your player may not be able to play RCE DVD's, we recommend that you do not order this title, as we are unable to accept returned RCE DVD's.

I have an Oritron DVD600, I guess what I would like to know is if I buy a DVD displaying the above notice, it will play once the player is hacked.

TBH Gary I thought that RCE was meant to ensure that a R1/ R2 disc could only be played on a DVD player that was set through its hardware/ software for R1/R2 etc and would not be fooled by software region hacks. So in all probability your player would not play it.
Just a guess, so I am probably wrong. :-)
Clayts would probably know better but I think that is the gist of it.

I have a proline 2000 which I think has the same firmware as the Oritron DVD600 and it plays RCE disks even when in region 0 (all region) mode

Just because a DVD player is set to Region 0 doens`t mean it is a region free player. They are some players out on the market that can be set to BYPASS, but this doesn`t always mean that it is code free. It is all down to how the player handles the region, how it detects the region of the disk etc. Even in BYPASS mode, a player can still set itslef to one and only one region - setting itself to the correct region of course and this, alowing RCE disks to work fine.

Hope this helps anyone who doesn`t know or understand anything about region codes and settings etc and clear up any missunderstandings that any may have :-)

Feel free to comment, ameand or experss views.

Regards, John.

I`m really sorry, I don`t understand all this technical jargon, could you please clarify whether you think one of these will work on my Oritron DVD600? Thanks for your help and patience. I`m not really thick!!

Hello,

Sorry if I have confused you.

I don`t know if the Oritron DVD600 DVD player will play RCE disks as I don`t know how the player does it region checking.

If it is a newish player, chances are it will. I gusse some one else might be able to give a few pionters as to whether it will work or not.

Hope this helps and let us all know how you get on.
