Philips DVDR-880 Multi Region Hack - HELP!

aghent (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 10th November 2002, 17:31

I`ve bought the above recorder recently and have attempted the multi-region hack as suggested. I`m using the remote which came with the recorder and have set the IR device to DVD Player remote on the DVDR itself. I am able to do Play 159 and input the code 121212005001 & 002 and it changes the regions to either R1 or R2 respectively, however when I input 121212005255 for muliti-region - nothing! It stays at whatever region it was set at.

Anyone seen this before? Got a solution? Or am going to have to revert to the One4all6 remote to configure multi-region correctly?

Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

I have exactly the same problem. So this thread needs bumping up a bit :D.

BTW: My Interpratation of the One4All remote is that it`s needed to get the dashes up so if I can get the dashes up with the Phillips remote I don`t need it....right?

Or wrong???

I actually went and got a One4All6 remote in the end. The problem lies not with getting the dashes up (the Phillips remote does that) it`s the inputting of the code needed to make it region free. The phillips remote doesn`t register whereas a One4All6 does.

I got my One4all off ebay for £6 but it was an old one and needed upgrading with the codes for the DVDR-880. If it`s upgradable, which I think most are, this can be done over the `phone so make sure you get an instruction manual if you buy 2nd hand.

I tried several times with the Phillips with no joy. The One4all did it straight away and it`s permanent!

Spiked

You didn`t leave me your email address when you mailed me. The mail came via dvdreviewer and so didn`t have a return address.

However, to reply to the points in your email:

I had trouble brining the dashes up with my Philips remote. So, after reading on various forums, I went out and got a OneForAll 6 from Argos (£24.99 on offer). After frigging about with this (it wouldn`t work with my recorder until I upgraded via the OneForAll website), I eventually managed to get the dashes (9 of them) up on my display. So far so peachy.

Using the Philips remote for input, I then tried the 222 222 005 255 code. Didn`t work. I read on here about the 121 212 005 255 code, so I tried that too. You guessed it! Didn`t work (I tried many times). So I put in the 121 212 005 001 code. It Worked!! Well, at least to region 1. I then put in the 121 212 005 002 code to revert back to region 2. No problems.

So, by now I am frustrated. So I try the 121 212 005 255 code again - and it worked. Don`t ask me why it did, I have no idea. I didn`t do anything different on the last time than any other. The only problem so far that I have found is that it won`t play my R1 Spiderman, which I believe is RCE, although my other R1 RCE disks play ok and several of my mates` do as well.

Speculation as to why this worked is welcome as I have no idea.

Thanks for that Major <salute>.

I`ve done everything you did bar use a One4all remote to get the dashes up. My Phillips remote does that. So farfrom this forum and this thread in particular it seems to be the common denominator. Ah well, the £30 I saved by buying the set at www.electric-warehouse.co.uk will have to go on a new remote. bah.

BTW: www.electric-warehouse.co.uk had it at the cheapest I could find, £360 + £10p&p, and they delivered net day at the specified time. recommended.

I would be most interested in how you get on, Spike.

Personally (and I don`t want to sound like a harbinger of doom here) I don`t think that a OneForAll will help you. If you can get the dashes up on your display with the Philips remote, I`m not sure what advantage you will find by using the OFA to get the same.

Hopefully I will be wrong. Maybe by using the OFA you will get `different` dashes!

Best of luck.

Trust me. It works!

I too was doubtful about whether the One4All would make a difference especially as the Phillips remote got me 90% of the way there. That`s why I bought 2nd hand. However it does do that last 10%. Whether it`s the code the O4A uses I don`t know but I am now region free because of it. Just make sure you use the O4A to do ALL of the hack. Don`t mix & match.

i`ve tried using the O4A to do the hack and it hasn`t worked. First of all the O4A didn`t even have the correct code for the DVD player....I had to download it from the Oneforall site. I can switch between regions using the relevant codes but it won`t stay region free. I`ve heard if you keep switching regions it locks after 25 swaps....is this true??

I used this method after failing to make my 880 multi region and IT WORKED ! I only have the Phililps remote and used the 121 ... 255 code, then the 001 code, then the 002 code then the 121 ... 255 code again (no power offs either) and it now plays everything.
