B and W picture Region 1s - help

rollneck (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 21st November 2000, 20:25

I`ve got a Matsui 110. I can only get B&W picture on my second telly with region 1 or NTSC. Is there anything on the market I can get to overcome this. Observations would be welcomed.

Thanks

Hi,

I recently changed my Matsui DVD110 for the latest Wharfedale 750S, not for the reason I would hasten to add !

The DVD110 was great and I never saw this problem, and I don`t believe I had any special video output settings on it, as I found it quite clever in that respect in that it knew what to output.

However if the TV you refer is unable to handle NTSC or PAL60 output then I would expect you to get B&W or jerky pictures.

Can you check what standards your TV can handle it sounds possibly like it only handles straight forward PAL.

B&W pictures are normally a sure sign of an NTSC signal not being understood by the TV receiver.

If this doesn`t help can you supply a bit more info regarding the settings you have on the DVD110 and what the TV is then maybe I or other members of the forum can help further.

Cheers

Chris

Yeah, it does sound like your TV can`t handle NTSC. Mine is in black and white for half a second when I play a R1 disc and the TV changes from PAL to NTSC mode.

Try it on a friend`s TV who has NTSC compatibility.

If it isn`t the TV then I don`t have a clue.

Or if you are feeding it through your VCR and then to the TV then the VCR isn`t NTSC compatable - more likely that your TV isn`t NTSC compatable though - you`d have to buy a converter from people like techtronics , Keene etc etc

Does the Matsui have an option to output a pseudo-PAL signal? If so, try changing that (the Wharfedale 750 has this). If not, it looks like you need a new telly or another DVD player that can produce a pseudo-PAL signal.

Thanks V.M for you assistance chaps.
The Matsui did work on my own newer telly, which can handle both PAL and NTSC, it`s my parents older set that has probs, by a strange co incedence, I too recently changed my Matsui for a Wharfdale. It sounds like I need a convertor that Simon refers too any chance of a bit bit more info with regard to that?

Thanks again though for your help

Ok - I`ve had a bit of a look aroudn and found the following - I havn`t tried any of these myself so it`s probably best to double check with where you get it from before buying it to be safe.

www.keene.co.uk - SB3600 - £59-99 inc vat
www.techtronics.com - Fuji NTSC to Pal video converter - £59-00 (not sure but maybe ex VAT)
www.maplin.co.uk - NZ77J (looks like the SB3600 from the picture) - £69-99

Obviously you will probably have to pay postage and don`t forget to read any small print about the boxes - I think that keene.co.uk said something about it only working with TV`s that displayed the B & W picture correctly

Hope this helps
