What would you do... (prolonged time off work)

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 8th October 2014, 09:03

I was just wondering what people would do if they found themselves out of work for a prolonged period of time (not the financial side of things; pretend the bills weren't an issue!) and how they'd pass the time.

I'm looking for a job now after handing my notice in (mid June) on my last one to work on renovating a house we had just bought.  This last 6 weeks I've been actively looking for a new role but there's only so much time you can spend doing that.

How would everyone else pass the time?

I remember when I got made redundant, I made sure I kept myself busy, but there's only so much time you can spend looking at job sites.

I was given some work counselling, and was told to still structure your day, as you did when working.

so I got up at normal time, did a work out.
every other day went for a long cycle ride
shower, breakfast
read technology sites, job sites etc
then I'd do research, work on my own computer prjects, do soem tutorials computer related.

have lunch, ina  different room, away from the computer, watch tv for an hour or so

in the afternoon, I'd do more research/training/work, or do some housework, get dinner ready for the evening.

the main thing is, to have a plan, so you don't just sit there, thinking "what shall I do now"

you may as well use the time to be constructive, either teach yourself something, get fit, get stuff done in the house you never have time for normally.

But at the same time you don't want to be punishing yourself.

good luck, try and enjoy it as well, and don't get depressed, that's the hard bit :(

Keep some structure and routine to your day/week.

Personally, as Admars says, Gym or run. Start or finish off a number of writing projects and find a Mooc that appealed.
Either directly related to your work or completely different to broaden your mind.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Same as above; get up early, go to the gym, go for a walk...keep busy, set yourself projects.

I'd probably end up w*nking myself intoa coma...but that's just me.
