Laptop malware issue...

Si Wooldridge (Reviewer) posted this on Sunday, 5th May 2013, 13:03

Been given a laptop to have a look at that is currently up the creek.  It`s actually a brand new Toshiba with Win 8 but the user accidently downloaded some malware called Torn TV.

Trying to uninstall this malware then seemed to switch off all administrator settings so the user was unable to do anything.  Switched it off and tried to restart but is now stuck in a "configuring windows features" loop stuck at 15%.

I`ve tried to google some answers based on the information given and it seems that you can no longer start in safe mode when switching on but only once windows has loaded.  Is that right?  Also seems that the old F8 trick doesn`t work either.  So based on what I can find on the web, I can only try some of these option when windows is running, but the problem is, of course, that it`s not running.

I do have a Win 8 disc for my new PC that I can run on this laptop, but before I try that, does anyone have any other ideas?

Hirens boot CD and kick to a miniXP/Linux desktop environment?
Or one of the many other varying versions of "live" boot media that may allow you to get it running to a point and if not, remove anything they want to keep before a full reset?

You could try Hitman Pro to create a boot-able USB stick, It`s a good program.

Tried booting to AntiVir rescue CD? Or another one by another free antivirus company?

Managed it in the end, using a combination of task manager and msconfig to shut down processes and services and then ensuring they didn`t start up again.  Then once restarted uninstalled something called Delta Toolbar which was the primary software for Torn TV, and then Torn TV uninstalled easily.

All fine now...

Wouldn't mind, but I've only had the laptop since Fri. I'm always on at the kids telling them not to download anything, or click on anything etc, and I'm the one that goes and does it. Thank you Si, not just for sorting out the laptop, but also giving me a kick each time I started stressing out over it...

I call that `the curse of the 9-year-old child". My brother in law gave me his laptop to look at a couple of years ago as it was running slow. lo and behold, 4 toolbars, loads of smileys, wallpapers, and a crapload of piggypacking spyware. Still hold my personal record for the most infections on a single device - 17,985
