Serious question regarding vision and eye test etc.

Jimbo :oÞ (Elite Donator) posted this on Monday, 26th September 2011, 16:09

Long explanation, short question!

I had my eyes tested earlier in the year and when doing the peripheral fields test (the flashing dots you hit a trigger when you see) I seemed to miss the same ones regularly.
All the other tests passed with no hassles, Optician decided I don`t need any form of glasses but wanted to recheck the fields test and arranged it for the following week.

Results were similar so he arranged for a hospital appointment and test there.
Now, this is where it gets wierd for me. I`ve never had any real issues I was aware of with my eyes except the long/short in each eye balancing to 20/20, and apart from the headaches from fluorescent/low energy bulbs and motion sickness with some games there hasn`t ever been a problem.

During this hospital eye test I had those drops put in, the ones that make your pupils dilate.
Very wierd experience watching your vision blur gradually to the point you can`t even read your phone keypad.

Test then redone, no problems exist so Doc arranges for an MRI to check the orbits of the eyes (and Christ is that thing scary n claustrophobic!!).

Since the drops have been put in I get an odd occasion where I feel as if my eyes are really dry and sticky and sometimes those illuminated motorway signs are blurry until I get to a couple of hundred yards from them (the yellow instructional ones... fasten yer seatbelt, accident ahead etc).

Just watched a movie on my Panny and for the first time in my life the credits were blurry, like a vertical double image. I found my right eye better than my left.
Blurriness is kinda still there, like that just woke up effect.

So question is, could these drops have damaged my eyes in some way or have I just hit that point of degeneration at the same time?

Apparently that is a possible side effect.

It`s time to go bellowing to your optician/doctor.

Watering is another possible one, although it`s not like a tear, just the way the eye goes if you`re welling up, for want of a better description.
Looking through your link though, I`m getting blurriness but no stinging :-/

My return appointment for the results of the MRI (which I should have booked ages ago and kept forgetting) is next Tuesday so I`ll bring it up then unless it gets worse in the next few days.

Did you see the Warning?

Warning
Do not drive unless you can see clearly.

Don`t you drive Taxis?

No, I missed it completely due to the fact I can`t see a thing.

Of course I saw the warning, my vision isn`t blurred to the point of failing an eye test, it`s blurred in one eye occasionally to give me enough concern to want it checked.

Oh, and thank you for your usual constructive input.

If it`s really bothering you, nip into your local walk-in centre as they carry the antidote drops to the dilating ones. The reason your optician has referred you to the local eye clinic is that if you`re lousing up your fields there`s a possibility of glaucoma or macular degeneration. The problem with the dilation drops is that they can gum up the tiny pores that regulate your interocular pressure and actually cause glaucoma. If you`re having vision problems and bathing the eyes doesn`t help you really need to flag the situation - better to be safe than sorry.

I`m not trying to wind you up, btw. I`m currently on twelve month checkups for both diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, so my eyes are regularly squirted with stuff to dilate my pupils, deaden my eyes for physical pressure monitoring and messiest of all fluorescine dye which makes my eyes light up under ultraviolet light. For days afterwards my eyes feel like rissoles in the snow...

What you lose in eyesight you make up for in sarcasm. Unfortunately your sarcasm won`t save your passengers life if you are seeing blurry signs. Common sense, don`t drive until your eyesight is sorted, but knowing you you will.

Hmm. Someone has an eye test. Admits he has blurred vision & still drives a taxi around. I point this out yet get usual Jimbo abuse.Quote:

Yet still drives passengers around. It ain`t me that`s the dick.

I can see the signs fine from 200+ yards when my vision IS blurred.
That`s well under the recommendation or you may not know the official reading distance for number plates etc.
I`m also describing the large, illuminated signs that change on motorway signage so yes, it`s absolutely safe for me to continue driving about with passengers in the car, and yes you are a dick even though you are trying to insinuate it`s someone else.

Let`s see what`s more dangerous... I drive with occasional blurring of one eye at long distance on road signs which have LED style illumination, or you drive to Spain with a car that couldn`t pass an MOT and was a death trap? Who`s the dick now?

Do me the same courtesy and favour I have done you up until now, ignore anything I post and don`t reply to them. Since the bullshit you`ve spouted regarding white goods I`ve not replied to anything you`ve posted to prevent another reoccurrence of you being an ar$e and getting a thread closed.

Why in the name of the wee man would you think your post would wind me up Mark?
I didn`t know there *was* an antidote drop so your post is exactly  the kind of answer I was hoping to see even though I didn`t know it!
(Not to take anything away from Jit`s reply cos that helped lots too)

Now I know antidote drops are available I`ll nip into the opticians tomorrow and ask about them.

Thanks to those who have tried to help.
